Posted By: <b>Hal Lewis</b><p>Bobby Doerr did not break into the Major Leagues until April 20, 1037:<br /><br /><a href="http://www.baseball-reference.com/d/doerrbo01.shtml" target="_new" rel="nofollow">http://www.baseball-reference.com/d/doerrbo01.shtml</a><br /><br />BUT...<br /><br />the "big book" shows that Bobby Doerr is included in the 1936 Goudey R314 "wide pen" premium set.<br /><br /><br />------------------<br /><br /><br />So, one of two things is possible:<br /><br />1) The set was actually issued in 1937, or<br /><br />2) Doerr was a Minor Leaguer in the 1936 set.<br /><br /><br />--------------------<br /><br /><br />Has anyone ever seen this card??<br /><br />Does anyone know what team uniform Doerr is wearing in the photo?<br /><br />Is it the 1937 Red Sox or the 1936 San Diego minor league uniform??<br /><br />--------------------<br /><br /><br />Bob Feller is also in this set, and he started pitching in the Major Leagues on July 19, 1936...<br /><br />so this is further evidence that maybe the set really WASN'T produced until 1937?<br /><br />

There is a set in the Mastro auction that is currently up and Doerr isn't listed in the condition breakdown. Mastro usually lists all the Hall of Famers if they can, so I would assume that Doerr isn't in the set. Posted By: <b>Greg Ecklund</b><p>Hal:<br /><br />After looking at that, I agree with you...I'm also surprised that the Feller card isn't pictured on the site, but Elbie Fletcher is. As the description says, the "Creamy" versions were made by Goudey in Canada, so it is likely an update of the original set with a few guys added in. The set having Doerr would definitely lead one to believe that the set was produced in 1937 as you said.<br /><br />Doerr even seems an odd choice for a 1937 set, especially one that included only 25 cards...he only played in 55 games that year and hit about .220. If memory serves, I believe he was a highly touted prospect, so that may account for it.<br /><br />Interesting that DiMaggio is still in a Seals uniform on his card...figure they would have gotten a shot of him as a Yankee.<br /><br />Anyone have a scan of a "Creamy" Doerr?

Posted By: <b>Hal Lewis</b><p>The selection of Doerr is very strange, even for a 1937 set. <br /><br />It would not surprise me if the "creamy" cards were not made in 1938 or even 1939 in Canada by Goudey.<br /><br />

I am not convinced they have anything to do with the regular R314s, other than the fact that they have a similar design. I have the Doerr, but can't tell what team's uniform he is in. But I really don't think the card was made of him as a minor leaguer. I believe the Canadian set includes a few minor leaguers, but all from Canadian teams. It would make no sense to include Doerr, who I believe was in the PCL.<br /><br />I've always assumed that the set is actually from 1937, although 1938 is a possibility too. <br /><br />R314s are actually quite a mystery. They appear to be 4 distinct sets: the regular cards, the regular cards without the "Litho in USA" line (these are not the same players and poses as the regular cards), the borderless cards (I believe these are the same players and poses as the "no Litho" cards) and the creamy cards. I don't know if anyone knows the true relationship between the four sets/types.

Posted By: <b>Hal Lewis</b><p>I agree 100% Paul.<br /><br />The "creamy" Canadian subset must not be a 1936 set.<br /><br />They are similar in size and a few photos to the regular R314's... but otherwise they are not related in time and distribution area.
