In the old days, cartes de visite (French for "visiting card" or "card to be given when you visit") were often made for the person to be handed or mailed out like business or calling cards. It would be natural for the owner of a cdv to sometimes write a little note and sign it.

Posted By: jay behrens
My favorite 19c piece I've seen autographed was a cabinet sized photo of Kid Nichols in his Omaha uniform that was signed on the back with a love letter to his girlfriend. The lady that showed it to me said that the girlfriend was her great-great grand mother. Couldn't get her to sell it, but don't really blame her either. She was just curious what it might be worth.

Jay

My place is full of valuable, worthless junk.
