T206 HOWIE CAMNITZ sells for $10,900...Collecting Opinions
Posted By: DJ
I have been watching this item out of curiousity, certainly not out of interest in adding this to my collection. What does this forum make of a $25 common card selling for $10,900?

According to the T206 Estimator, the worth of this card is $18,750. Of course we all know the Estimator is a 'good guess'.

My feelings is that this is where grading plays an important role in deceiving the public. If this was re-submitted and got a 9, then according to the Estimator, this card would be worth around $1,000. An immediate loss of $17K or $10K in which ever way you want look at it.

Here are my questions to the Board:
1) Was this a deal?
2) What have other 10's sold for and have they been consistent to the Estimator?
3) How much would this card sell for in Mastro or REA?

Thank You,
DJ

T206 HOWIE CAMNITZ sells for $10,900...Collecting Opinions
Posted By: Adam J. Moraine
$10,900 for a T206 common??? What a waste of serious $$$$. I could think of about 20-30 cards that I could buy with $10,900 instead of a high grade t206 common. That IF were not graded would probably sell for $60.00-$75.00 . Obiviously, someone has too much money, and too little brain power.

Best regards,

Adam J. Moraine

Posted By: jay behrens
It's probably a gift grade to one of thier major submitters. How that rates a 10 with a 95/5 back is beyond me.

Jay

I like to sit outside drink beer and yell at people. If I did this at home I would be arrested, so I go to baseball games and fit right in.

Posted By: Lee Behrens
legacysportscards has quite a few T206s graded 8 and almost everyone of them has a noticable flaw or 2. I keep trying to understand the higher grades but they never make sensee to me to how they can give those grades out. one of the only true high grades I remember seeing is the T206 Keeler that a board member had that graded 96 Mint.

Lee

Posted By: Scott Elkins
The card is not a 10 from an average submitter. Also, this seller seems to get some "gift" grades from PSA - many of the 8's he has looked very much trimmed to me (of course, I don't want to open that can of worms in this thread).

The buyer will probably make a nice little four figure profit on the card when they go to resell however. Myself, I will take rarity over condition any day!

Posted By: Darren J. Duet
Personally, a psa 10 t206 common does little for me. Sure it's great and all that but definitely not worth 10 or 17K. A 5 or 6 presents very nicely, and often so does a 3--these for me are the beauties.

I buy cards not holders.

Posted By: Edwin Miller
I was an under bidder on the card. I received the following e-mail:

You are the second bidder in my auction # 5195181775
‘ 1911 T206 HOWIE CAMNITZ - GEM MINT - PSA 10 ’
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=31718&item=5195181 775&rd=1
Unfortunately the highest bidder has some problems with the payment.
Let me know if you're still interested in this item.
Please send me your zip code so I can find out the shipping cost for this
item.
I look forward to hearing from you soon

The high bidder has almost no feeedback -- I am new to the hobby, but is this a red flag for a shill? Anyway, I was relieved he outbid me because I almost overpaid -- was enticed by a T 206 10 which I had never seen before, but I am learning. Apaprently, the size of the bar code means it was graded a long time ago when standards were not as high and wuuld not likely get a 10 now.

Anyway, I appreciate everyone's posts and hope to be a helpful contributor.

Ed

Posted By: Peter_Spaeth
Awfully early for the high bidder to be backing out. That said, the seller's feedback speaks for itself. That said, it sure looks funny how many times the high bidder bid, like he was trying to run it up all the way to your bid but messed up and went over. That said, it's a lot of money for a common whatever the label says.

Posted By: Peter_Spaeth
My own perspective, as a collector anyhow, would be, why pay so much for a 10 holder when you could get almost as nice a card in an 8 or 7 holder for a mere fraction of the price? Why?

Posted By: leon
I too like rare things. Save your money. 6k is still quite a bit. Sure a "10" common T206 is nice but I am positive you can find something more rare, more cool, and that will hold value better than a "10" holder. (if value matters) regards

Posted By: DJ
Basically, you are paying for the holder and the prestige of owning a PSA10 holder.

If the card was a PSA9 (how can a '10' have such a bothersome back?), it would be worth a touch over a grand. I too enjoy rare items (I'm a T206 back junky) but when you get down to it, it's still only a common and not something cool like a Briesh-Williams common that would grade so high, but a common T206 card that would look just as nice in a 6, 7 or 8 holder. And the story about the back-out...makes me shiver a tad.

My advice, wait or save up for a Ty Cobb T206 with a Ty Cobb back in any condition. That's my goal a few years down the line.

DJ

Posted By: J Levine
Sheesh...this kills me...I will make you a PSA 10 holder for half the price. $5000 will get you a one of kind, ultra rare, Levine PSA 10 holder. You can put any card in it you so desire. Hell, I will even through in a t-206 common for free. You are paying for the right to own a card some person at PSA has opinioned is a nice card. Just his opinion. Nothing more. It is not objective. I don't care what standards are used or how a rubric is produced it is still a subjective grade. My creased and stained Camnitz is just as beautiful in my eyes as that PSA 10 crap. Cards were meant to be collected, traded, held, played with. Not sterilized. If you want a good investment for your money, wait until something truly rare comes along.

My opinion.
Joshua

Posted By: John_B_California
The market for high grade commons is all over the map.

In the last Memory Lane Auction, someone payed $21 k for a '34 Goudey common in PSA 9. A PSA 10 '52 Topps Pafko sold for $75+ k. Maybe you could flip this card for $15 k next week. Who's to say.

I'd rather own a card that has a long history of being rare (i.e. T206 Plank). Instead of rarity based on the minute difference of a 9 and a 10.

Posted By: Chuck R
Edwin: You sound like a great guy, but between the concerns you've raised on this thread and the "waittilnextyear" thread, I think it might be a good idea for you to sit tight for a while, read the board here and get to know some of the members before contemplating any other 5-figure deals. Check out the sites of dealer/collectors like Leon and Scott Brockelman (and many others) and you'll find some truly rare stuff. The knowledge you'll pick up here will help give you peace of mind in those big transactions.
