Unc Postcards - Johnson, Ruth, etc.

Posted By: martindl

Apologies for asking but i've spent the better part of two days trying to find an old post and have come up empty, though i'm positive that the thread exists.

I'm looking for info about an uncataloged set/group of postcards - they're fairly crude, with player/manager images set in the middle of the pc in a rectangle with a ton of white space between the image and the sides of the card. I believe the thread started out with a link to an Ebay auction and then went on to discuss the other pc's.

The cards are very similar to the 1925 Anonymous Managers Postcards (2005 std cat pg 26) but picture players versus Managers. There was a Cobb, lot 211 in the Lipset April 2003 auction that looks to be a player card.

Posted By: Julie
1) If you're looking for a PICTURE from an old auction, it will be long gone. and
2) If that similar set you mentioned was meantioned in the old thread, try looking up the similar set by name.

3) Bill: suggestions! Solutions?

Posted By: Paul
I only remember the manager cards and thread. Cobb was a player-manager, so he appeared in the set.

Posted By: Anonymous
"1925 Anonymous Manager Postcards" The set title should be changed as I have a variation that is not cataloged. It is Ty Cobb without the "Mgr.", and his name is in upper and lower case, size is smaller at 3.25" by 5", and the back has a slightly different "Post Card" design. Only one Ive seen, but Ive only been tracking it for about 1 year. Anyone own one of these Cobb w/o "Mgr" cards?? Frank

Posted By: martindl
Frank,
The Cobb card in the Lipset auction was the same non-manager card that you have.

I saw three of these postcards yesterday. A Bill McKechnie manager, though i can't remember the team designation, Walter Johnson Senators and Babe Ruth N.Y. I know i've seen the Johnson before, on Ebay I think; have never seen the Ruth though.

Posted By: fkw
I have the Lipset catalog and your right its the same Cobb (lot 211). Did you notice if the Mgr. McKechnie card was larger. I also remember seeing the Johnson on eBay but cant remember if it said "Mgr", but I guess it wouldnt as he wasnt manager until 1929 and there is a Stanley Harris card known (Mgr Washington). I believe Ive seen about 5-7 different but just havent made notes or remember the exact players. There was a large group of them on eBay a couple years back. Frank

Posted By: martindl
Here are the postcard scans. I was wrong on the McKechnie - theres no Mgr designation. The McKechnie has a different back script for the words 'post card'.

Any info is appreciated. Thanks to Trae for the hosting.

[img][/img]
