Off Topic / Very Interesting Topps Proof Card

Posted By: Paul
With all the discussion going on about the proper boundaries of this board, I feel a little awkward doing this, but I'm going to start an off-topic thread that I think will be of interest to a lot of folks here. If it gets deleted, I understand.

Topps recently auctioned off a proof card that I found very interesting. It's a 1977 Bill Madlock, showing him with the Giants. In his regular issue card, he was shown with the Cubs. He was traded from the Cubs to the Giants in February 1977. When his card was issued with the Cubs, I'm sure everyone just assumed that Topps didn't have sufficient time to revise his card and show him with the Giants. But, here is that card. Topps went through all of the trouble to show Madlock correctly with the Giants, but went ahead and issued his card with the Cubs anyhow. I'm not sure what the explanation for this could be. Perhaps the Giants card was never intended for the Topps set. Maybe Topps was contemplating an "update" set in 1977, but scrapped the idea.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5164069692

Posted By: Brian Koyama
I kinda like the unpublished 1977 Rollie Fingers card that Toppsvault has. Must be nice to pull stuff like that out of the vault. Wonder how many 1977 Reggie Jackson Baltimore Orioles cards are in there?

Posted By: Andrew
Per Olbermann, there's four JACKSON ORIOLES. He has three and SCD (or Lemke) has one. Keith sniped me on the last one, which sold for ~$6K.

“A smooth sea never made a skilled mariner.” - English Proverb

Posted By: Marc S.
I've been corrected/informed from a very knowledgeable collector that this is not actually an unpublished Topps card.

Rather - this Madlock is what was used in the 1977 O-Pee-Chee issue. Unlike previous OPC issues, there were a few corrections in the 1977 OPC issue, including Madlock, Murcer, and all of the Blue Jays....

Hope this helps.

Cheers-
~ms
