Posted By: joe maples
Here are 2 Old Judge cards graded NM, Hanlon by SGC and Brouthers by PSA. I would like to have the Brouthers graded by SGS, but I don't think it would get the NM grade by SGC. The differences in these 2 grading companies is pretty obvious. Any comments. These came out a little fuzzy. Different scans a little better.

Posted By: Joe_G.
Hello Joe, it is very difficult to say how the Brouthers would grade without seeing far better scans. I have the same pose Brouthers that would grade a legitimate SGC 80-84 but SGC found issue (rightfully so) with small imprint on the back of the card from an old pencil note (initials) that were long ago cleanly erased. I didn't even notice the small indentations on the back until looking at the card closely with light hitting it just so. It graded SGC 50.

Your Hanlon card is a real beauty as well, beautiful dark photo.

I've been meaning to send you some Detroit scans of my own. I'll do so when my 3rd attempt at a good scanner for slabbed cards is a success (crossing fingers).

Regards,
Joe Gonsowski

Posted By: JimB
It is impossible to give an informed opinion on the grade of these cards based on these scans. For all the criticism of grading companies here, I am surprised to see people jumping to such quick conclusions on grades based on so little evidence.

Border sizes vary quite a bit with OJs, so that one has smaller borders than the other is no indicator on its own that one is trimmed. I have said it before and I will say it again, all three grading companies overgrade Old Judges. I don't know why. Perhaps they feel compelled to cut some slack on such and old and apparently condition-challenged issue.

JimB

P.S. While I don't think the grading companies consider it much when evaluating Old Judges, I think print contrast should be a major consideration for the issue.
