What a caramel card must look like to an acid head
Posted By: Ben
Gil- it ain't real. Even if it was real, it would still be the most horrendous looking card I could ever imagine. I think there have been a few reasonably priced low grade e93 cobbs offered up in BST and on ebay lately, so you shouldnt have much trouble finding an authentic one.

What a caramel card must look like to an acid head
Posted By: Gilbert Maines
My interest is not in a low grade Cobb card. I actually do not care which player is on that card. I think that card is a fine example of ......... (Im not sure what). But come on now. Cards ripped in half which are missing lots of paper are common. How often do you see this damage? I would not know how to create this artificially (if the card really looks that way).

Of course I wouldn't pay much for it, but as a curiousity, sure.

Posted By: Scott
You can still learn enough from studying ebay scans to i.d. some of the more obvious fakes, like this one. If you want to learn about '34 Goudeys, do a search on ebay and look at the ones being offered by reputable dealers...study them. Eventually you will get to a point where it is obvious that a card like this one is a fake - it just doesn't look right for a number of reasons...lots of little things will be percolating in your subconscious over time, to help you reach that point

Posted By: Gilbert Maines
Epilog -

The seller states that the acid head Cobb is real. Probably would have said that the Grove is real too. What a caramel card must look like to an acid head
Posted By: jay behrens
Gilbert, notice the vague answer. He says the card is real, whihch is true. You will get a real card. But he doesn't directly address if the card is an authentic card from the era. I am sure his answer that the color is the way it is because it got wet is also true and he probably knows this fact becuase he was the one that got the card wet.

Thruthful answer from him, but not the answers to the questions you asked.

Jay

The difference between genius and insanity is acceptance.

Posted By: hankron
Says seller: "Condition is off. The colors are from being wet. Hope this helps."

The original card is a lithograph. Lithographic ink doesn't disolve in water. You would need much nastier stuff than water to make a tie dye out of the original card.

Posted By: hankron
Having separated inks in my day (that's not drug slang), I can tell you that even if the original card was soaked overnight in the correct solvent the card wouldn't turn out this anyway.

The card reminds me of the drier lint filter that time I left crayola pens in the pants pocket.
