Another novice question

Was it common for the sizes of the cards to be slightly different as far as width is concerned. Is it just a sign of the times where they were cut by hand or does it indicate some altering. I dont believe I have any card(s) that have been trimmed, but I was wondering if I should be curious of this size disparity. My assumption is given the era that there is "similarity" in size and as opposed to exactness, but I would appreciate knowledgable (as opposed to my assumptions) feedback on the issue.<br /><br />thanks and sorry for the continued beginner questions.
