this could be an issue (M101-4? E121? Cobb)

If it WERE real I think the price would be about right.....I would need to see it in person, to be sure, but I wouldn't feel too good if I were the buyer.....the "white" back is what made me think there's a problem here too....others thoughts ??

[edited for title]

Posted By: Paul
The cards look like E121s, not M101-4s. My guess is that they are real. The reason is that his Casey Stengel card lists Stengel with the Phillies, rather than the Giants. If someone was trying to fake a set, or fake a back, I don't know why they would introduce this discrepancy.

The seller has apparently gotten several inquiries about the authenticity of these cards. He has listed a few more, and they know come with an offer to send the card directly to a grader before shipping it to the winner. The offer is only good if you make arrangements in advance, which I admit sounds suspicious. But I'm still betting on authentic at this point.

Posted By: Bill Cornell
I edited the title to make it more descriptive, but I appear to have gotten the set wrong. Thanks for pointing that out, Paul. My 2005 SCD says Herpolsheimer was a M101-4 back, but that shows what I don't know.

The seller is a "drop shop" consignor - there are several of these now on eBay. They don't own the cards, but are selling them on behalf of some walk-in customer. I think their new guarantee is a very nice gesture, although their expertise about the cards' authenticity is anyone's guess.

Bill

Posted By: Bill Cornell
One other thing - Julie, why would you possibly feel sorry for someone who dropped $1500 on that card? If he's bidding that high, he either knows what he's doing or he's got a screw loose. Sympathy isn't required.

Bill

Posted By: Todd Schultz
The size is wrong for m101-4/5, and Cobb was not manager until 1921. Stengel was with Philly by that time, but he is not listed in the E121-series of 80, although the others offered apparently are listed in that set. Note that Stengel and Johnson are the same pics used in the E135 sets, and that the Herpolsheimer back is different than that used in m101-4.

Could be real, but the weak scans give me little confidence, and the Stengel and Johnson looked pretty washed-out, much like the E135 reprints.
Posted By: leon
These things are fake as a 3 dollar bill. If someone has an older (maybe 1-2 yrs) Fritsch catalogue they could see them as they were in it.....I keep all the big Auction catalogues but not the smaller, everyday mailorder ones. As a collector of "backs" I wish they were real......AND the seller (the consignee) says there are about 35 total....again, if this were bought as a reprint set (which I think it is) this would make sense....regards all (*and Dan...you are safe since we don't have Grandy's in Baltimore)

Posted By: Paul
I think Fritsch reprints only actual sets. He doesn't make fantasy sets -- except "one year winners" and other sets that look nothing like a real vintage set. So I'm still betting on real. The seller has a few commons up for auction. I may buy one and see what I get. I agree that caution is very appropriate here. I would have bid much more on the Stengel if I was confident that it was authentic.

Posted By: Todd Schultz
Damn, can't you do the work for me? I have a few Frisch catalogues laying around, but in my "filing" system, they could be anywhere. What set is reprinted? His website has lots of reprint sets for sale, but no e121 or similar that I can see. Could you track this down for us, pleaz?

Todd

Posted By: leon
Fritsch cards. I spoke to a nice enough guy named "Mark". He said he's been there 12 years and doesn't remember this kind of reprint set. I still can picture the reprint set in my mind (from the mag, whichever it was)that I saw some time ago. I am 98% sure it's a fake.......as well as the others they have listed.....if I am wrong then I guess I can eat some crow with my chicken fried steak........regards all

Posted By: Brian Weisner

Hi Leon,
I could have sworn this set was reprinted by Frisch also, so If there's crow to be eaten you won't be doing alone. I guess I can go through a few boxes of old catalogs and magazines tonight while I'm watching the game. I'll let you know. Thanks Brian

Paging Mr Lemke..... Any thoughts
