Does anyone have any other cards from this set?
Posted By: Todd Schultz
unless you're truly wanting to sell the card or buy another. I'll take a stab here, although I don't know your card's dimensions, have not seen one before, and would want to view it under a loupe for dot patterns.

Looks like a fantasy or collector card to me, issued after the fact. The back uses purple ink that is often found in prewar period, which makes me suspicious of the creator's intent. The front uses a typeset that I have not seen before, and which I do not believe matches up with anything else from the period, although I'll let others disagree. It is also highly unusal for a period card to carry the date--other than magazine/newspaper supplements that were issued on a particular date, I do not recall seeing this before either (save for some copyright dates). The large caption area below the picture is also unique to me.

If authentic and period, it stands alone as a separate issue, not a variation. It would also predate Mendelsohn's m101 set by a few years, his being the first to use B&W "action" shots on a wide-scale basis (other than arguably T222). Seems odd that we would not have seeen one before, although that doesn't mean all that much. Why do you reference it as a Sporting News card, and do you have any other info to share about it?

Posted By: Anonymous
Todd,

I assure you the card is authentic. I have only ever seen two cards from this set. The one I own and a Connie Mack card that was offered five or six years ago.

Posted By: Anonymous
Todd,

I'm sorry to have you repeat the question. Now to answer all of your questions.

1. Why not post this on the main board?

I will. Gladly. I will go further and ask if anybody has cards from a blank-backed 1915 set that I have four cards from in my collection.

2. What are the dimensions?

I don't have a ruler and never have and I have still collected over 2100 cards in my current collection. From top to bottom the card is an eighth of an inch longer than a E135 Collins McCarthy and the same length as a large E220. From side to side the card is just a little wider than the inside picture of a E135 or E220. I apologize for the unscientific and inexact measurements at least from listing inches.

3. Why do you think this is affiliated wit TSN?

When the Connie Mack was offered years ago, it was listed as a 1911 Sporting News. The auction I bought this card in listed it as a 1911 Sporting News. When I asked Frank K. Ward about the card, he identified it as a 1911 Sporting News. When I researched the stamp on the back, the card set was identified as 1911 Sporting News. Also, in the case of the two samples in question, both pictures appeared as full page supplements in the Sporting News.

Just allow me some time to size down my scans and post the cards. I hope I am not coming off as cocky. It is unintentional.

Posted By: Todd Schultz
I'm intrigued. My reasons for asking you to post on the main board were that you'll get more responses, and it didn't look like you were actually buying, selling or trading your card. If you're looking to sell, what would be your price?

Posted By: Anonymous
Todd,

I'm flattered by the offer, but the intent on posting the card on this board was to flush out other cards to expand on my single card from this set. I know I have a one (or two, if you count the Mack) of a kind find. I will be holding onto the card. No offense.

Posted By: Todd Schultz
I've got a 1 of 3 myself, from 1917, and have no intentions of selling. Just figured it didn't hurt to ask.

Posted By: Anonymous
I thought I remembered that card. I'm on Lipset's blacklist for slow payment of the Doyle on the main forum part of this discussion and a 1916 Boston Store Rixey (same purchase-two lots from eBay). My fault. I'm not trying to get back in his good graces.
