I could use some help identifying a postcard
Posted By: Chris Counts
Can anybody tell me what kind of postcard this is? At first I thought it was a Bill and Bob's, but there's nothing on the back that says so ...

Posted By: mark bowers
Chris: It is a Bill and Bob. Many of their Braves postcards carry only the "K" with no reference to Bill and Bob. Mark

Posted By: Jodi Birkholm
Who, or what, was Bill and Bob?

I am familiar with these postcards, as it seems as though each player depicted was given a quantity of their own card for personal distribution. I know that Del Crandall was still mailing these out with mail requests as late as the mid-1990's.

Do these PCs carry any value? I have seen the signed Crandall with retail price tags of up to $60. Obviously, this asking price has no basis in either

A. Autograph value
B. Reality
C. Both!

Fill us in, guys!

Jodi

Posted By: dstudeba
Jodi -

I am sure someone here is more knowledgable about Bill & Bobs than I, but they are very collectable. The Matthews easily sells for over $50. Some of them have printed autos, and I think there are scarcities in the set that sell for over $100. Hopefully that helps until someone else has better info!

Posted By: mark bowers
Jodi:

Perhaps I can supply some of the information for you. Let me begin with your question about "value". As a collector value is unimportant to me. Completing the set is.

I have been collecting Bill and Bob's for close to 50 years and am still missing three (Dressen, Keely and Covington with one bat). Some, like Mathews, Haney and one of the Crandall's seem to pop up from time to time. Others like Aaron, Spahn, Torre and the three Adcocks among others we hardly ever see.

I have to say that on the scarcity issue yes, for some reason, they are very scarce and on the issue of collectibility they are, in my opinion, some of the most beautiful cards ever made and among those of us who seek them extremely collectible.

Having said that there are those who will never consider postcards "cards" which is fine and to them I say contact me and I will take them off your hands. The same with the scarce Ford Tiger postcards.

As a postscript, awhile back somebody asked about the most scarce Aaron cards and I suggested my Bill and Bob postmarked in August 1956 from Milwaukee. I have never seen another one.

Mark

Posted By: Jodi Birkholm
Thanks for all the info, guys!

Mark, I am still hoping to hear what "Bill and Bob" was. Was it a business of some kind? Were they two collectors or fans who had these issued?

I have only ever owned the Crandall due to the fact he sent one to me many years ago.

Posted By: mark bowers
Jodi:

I should know the answer to your question after all these years but if I had the answer at one time I have forgotten it. Your best bet would be to contact Dan Even as he is the "postcard master". If you don't have his email adddress send me yours and I will forward it to you. Mine is mkbow2@surewest.net
