Value of Panoramic photoengraving of 1911 Athletics?

Posted By: Matt
I have the opportunity to own a panoramic photo-engraving of the 1911 Athletics. The photo-engraving itself measures about 7.5 x 19.25 and is mounted inside a cardboard frame measuring 10.25 x 23.5. The piece is supposed to be period to 1911, and photo-engraving would be appropriate for that time, but I can't be certain of the date (thanks to David Rudd for helping me get that far).

As the only comparable piece I could find was the famous photograph sold years ago by Hunt for $8500, I have no idea of value for this piece. Any thoughts?

Please give the scans a minute to load. Thanks in advance.

Posted By: Mark
This is about as good as it gets for Athletics collectors. I love Connie Mack's lid! But the scan is so big and cumbersome, it is tough to view it properly.

This wonderful piece is obviously woth quite a lot, but the value may be contingent upon condition. It looks like it was matted in unusual fashion (almost like the mat is hiding something). If the mat is not concealing any significant flaws, I would put it in the $4,500 - $6,000 range (Catalogue auction - not ebay).

Can you post a photo of the entire piece, frame included (even though it would not be a very tight shot?) Thanks!

Value of Panoramic photoengraving of 1911 Athletics?

Posted By: Matt Hart
I'd be a little cautious with the piece. First off is the size, Its on the small side. Panoramas that sell for several thousand are normally 30 plus inches. I also think the piece is probably a produced several years after the photo was taken. Judging from the image, my guess is that the piece is from the 20's. While its a great looking piece, if it brought more than 2,000 at auction I'd be real surprised.
Matt

Posted By: Matt
Thanks so far for the responses (and the photoshop help); as there clearly are differing opinions, I'd appreciate any other voices on the matter.

sporteq - the piece is a photo-engraving which means it is certainly not a modern reproduction. What do you mean by 'fake'? Perhaps you are comparing it to what a photograph looks like and it looks different causing you to say that?

Posted By: sporteq
Could very well be a "MODERN" day print ... There is a "REAL" photo panoramic that sold at a major auction
house that i remember has that same dark spot above the "Mascot" possible remade from that photo, who knows.
After nearly 20 years .. i have not seen an engraving or print like the one you may purchase in sepia-tone.
I know i have seen a gray scale black/white image more like a premium with borders of this image.

Best of luck!!
aL
Posted By: Matt
Thanks for the background. I showed David Rudd a high resolution scan of the printing and he said based on the dot pattern that it is a photo engraving and definitely not a modern reproduction.

The only one I know of that sold at auction was this one:
http://www.huntauctions.com/online/imageviewer.cfm?auction_num=16&lot_num=979&amp ;lot_qual=

if you have a link to another, I'd love to see it as it would be helpful.

Posted By: pat
I would say $1,000 on the this piece if it is period. I have seen it before but can't remember where I think the one that was in Hunt's was a full size piece. Given the smaller size and not other examples this size, I would be cautious. Personally, I would pass on it. Just doesn't "feel" right based on size, format and other examples. Save your money for a full size 1910 to 1913 A's panorama. One shows up every couple of years in the major auction houses.
