Antique Wood Chair with Carved Baseball Scene
Posted By: Ben
I'm hoping some of you guys can provide me with information on this unusual chair. My grandparents purchased it many years ago at an antique shop. Exactly how old is it? What is the value of such a piece? Has anyone ever seen another? Thanks in advance!

Posted By: Rhys
My guess would be 1900-1920 based on the equipment and the style of overhand pitching. The furniture style also looks to be that of the early 20th century but that is just a broad estimate.

Rhys

Posted By: CarltonHendricks
These type chairs are pretty rare, but they do surface now and then. I've seen the one you have, as well as the rocker version, plus there is a love seat. I wrote about these in a preview of the Hunt Auctions November 2005 auction. You can read my perspective on them in this link: http://www.sportsantiques.com/hunt11_12_05.htm

The rocker version of this chair in the November 2005 Hunt Auction, sold for $4,100.00. Hunt had another rocker in their February 25th 1995 auction. It sold for $1,980.00.

I can not substantiate it but I speculate these chairs may have been given as prizes by the Bull Durham Tobacco Company. My reasoning is that the Bull Durham bull is prominently featured in the background of the baseball scene.

Last summer I came across a similar chair at the Kane County flea market, designed remarkably like the baseball ones but with a bowling scene. The guy was asking $1,500.00.
