Posted By: Max Weder
Here's George Wright from a copy of Church's Base Ball

But even cooler (ok, for me, at least) in this thread is that the Cobb cut above is dated on the day I was born.

Let's see some of your more scarce HOF autographs!
Posted By: Fred Y

This fellow is considered a fairly scarce auto--He died in 1965 at the age of 62. Got this in person when I was 16 yrs old (1956) & working as a bellhop after school.

At that time Paul (53 yrs old) was a scout for the Milwaukee Braves and came thru Wellsville to take a look at the players on the Class D PONY League Wellsville Braves.

I carried his bags to his room, received my .25¢ tip, and later when he came back downstairs for supper I had the hotel stationary ready & asked him to sign. The result is a nice large, sharp auto-- in pencil!

Posted By: Mark
Cool stuff everyone.

Love the story attached to the Waner. An anecdote like that changes the value from a few hundred bucks to absolutely priceless!

Ruth wouldn't be considered scarce, but it's number one in my book!

Let's see some of your more scarce HOF autographs!
Posted By: Fred Y
--for your nice comment!

Strange coincidence that I got the auto in Aug '56 and he died in Aug '65!

It was just 4 yrs after he made the Hall of Fame in 1952.

As I recall he wasn't a big or imposing man, but when he entered the lobby he just had the "look" of royalty!

PS---I was going to post a couple of other HOF autos I have, but someone told me Bob Feller wasn't considered "scarce"! LOL!!!!!!!

Posted By: Mark
As they say, a ball NOT signed by Feller is more scarce than one that he did sign!

It's a shame really, I feel that due to his longevity and willingness to sign, people tend to forget what a truly incredible pitcher he was.

Posted By: Jodi Birkholm
He's only willing to sign if you tether a nickel to a string, slightly out of his reach until after he signs some worthless item. That man would sell his own bodily fluids if he thought he could make eight cents. Not only does that mentality devalue his autograph, it also deflates public perception of the man holding the Sharpie. Rightly so.

Posted By: Mark
I'm not going to fault a man for trying to make a buck. He was an incredible baseball player and an American hero.

But to each their own - let's see some of those beauty's in your collection Jodi...

Posted By: Jodi Birkholm
"He was an incredible baseball player and an American hero."

He certainly was, and he'll be the first to tell you! I've met the man more than once, and the experiences left a bad taste in my mouth. Not that he's unfriendly; just full of himself and will do anything for a dollar.
Posted By: Mark
"Not that he's unfriendly; just full of himself and will do anything for a dollar."

Can't disagree with you there. Like most older guys, he can be extremely opinionated and is not at all concerned with how others see him.

As far as his signing habits, like many other players from his era, I'm sure he sees the autograph business as his opportunity to 'cash in' in a way that he couldn't do during his playing career.
