Posted By: Richard Simon
I am examining a scrapbook which contains 3 1/2 x 5 1/2 pictures of 1932 Minneapolis Millers. Any clue on value or who issued these?
Thanks for your help.

Posted By: Dan Bretta
Hi Richard, they are 1933-34 Worch Cigar American Association cards - You could get them by sending in the cigar bands to the Worch company. They are in the $50-$100 range I would guess.

Posted By: Dan Bretta
Yep, but don't quote me...they don't come up often so they could go for much more than that or they could even go for less depending I guess on who is trying to collect them, but it has been my understanding that the Worch cards are quite difficult.

I noticed you had a Buzz Arlett in one of the photos you removed can you show a good scan of that card?

Thanks.

Posted By: Dan Bretta
Wow! I think you've discovered a new card...that one would have to be from 1934, 35 or 36 as those are the years that Arlett played with the Millers.

Nice score!

edited to add: I'm sure you know this already, but Arlett was no ordinary player even though he played only one major league season (Which was pretty darn good). He is one of the alltime greatest minor leaguers. He was not only a great hitter with power, but a fine pitcher as well.

Posted By: Todd Schultz
the first three you showed are not Worch's. Good news though--the one in the upper left looks to be Joe Hauser--the key to whatever set it is--could be 1932 Wheaties, but not 1933.

The Arlett is a different card altogether--closer to Worchs in style, and Arlett is listed in the Worch's set, although as noted, if he is in a Miller's uni, it dates this card to 1934 or later.

Posted By: Todd Schultz
but back damage would lower values significantly (even if blank backed, and especially 1933 Wheaties).

Posted By: Dan Bretta
If these are 1933 Wheaties then they have to be cut down...the size mentioned above is more in line with what Worch Cigars measure, and the Wheaties cards have the players name, team and year printed on the bottom of the card.

Posted By: Todd Schultz
they are not 1933 Wheaties--but they very well could be 1932 Wheaties, which bore facsimile sigs (I did not know they were personalized though--maybe just Hauser?)

Posted By: Dan Bretta
Actually I do see the 1932 Wheaties set now and I think you're right that they are probably the 32 Wheaties. The one shown in the book does have a personalized sig on it so maybe all the 32's were like that.

I'm still stumped on the Arlett though. Can't find a listing on VCP either.

Posted By: Dan Bretta
HA! Someone better alert Don at SCD...If I were a betting man I would guess that's exactly what that Arlett card is...especially considering the scrapbook has the Ruth and Foxx Worch cards.

Posted By: Todd Schultz
the '33 wheaties Hauser is the most valuable card in the set by far--in fact, if memory serves only the Bancroft comes close, with the rest essentially interchangeable. I paid $100 for the Hauser I posted. I would guess that the commons from each Wheaties set are only worth about $5 apiece if they have back damage.

The more I think about it, the less convinced I am that the Arlett is a 1933-34 Worch minor league card--the borders are too wide. Do you have any others that look like Arlett's card?

Posted By: Richard Simon
You guys are always on top of everything!! Thanks for all the info.
If I buy this scrapbook, I guess I should submit the cards for grading.
SGC or PSA?
Also should I not submit those that seem to be 1932 Wheaties commons, as they would have scrapbook residue and they also have a pinhole at the top. And according to the comments they don't have much value with the damage.
The Worch Ruth and Worch Foxx will have scrapbook residue but they don't have pinholes.
Would there be a way to remove the scrapbook residue and is that something I should consider doing and is that considered something which falls into the "it is allright to do that" category?
=
I refuse to engage in a battle of wits with an unarmed opponent.
Unknown author
--
We made a promise. Posted By: Scott Mt. Joy
You might want to see if anyone has soaked any of those card types before. If they are soakable then you might be able to get a them off the paper backing without any back damage to the card.
