Posted By: George Dreher
Actually Barry, most cities in contention will pre-produce World Series tickets for their respective home venues in anticipation of being in the World Series even before the pennant games begin, so they will be prepared beforehand and have an ample supply of tickets way in advance. Such tickets are supposed to be destroyed if they lose the pennant, but sometimes "resourceful" people with inside access manage to save tickets from the shredder and smuggle them out, hence the rare "phantom" ticket. They are listed in memorabilia price guides. Pretty interesting stuff and as you said, a type of "fantasy" item even though they are legitimately produced to be actual World Series tickets in anticipation of the team winning the pennant.

I have a 1951 World Series program that has Yankees vs. Dodgers. I am actively looking for an idea of a starting price to ask for with selling this item. The only information I have for this is that my Great Grandfather told my Grandfather that three people each took two of them before they were destroyed and my Grandfather says the other one that my Great Grandfather took is destroyed and that one has been found as just the cover leaving mine one in a possible four. Online searching has given me nothing but an occasional mention such as one person saying it is "the holy grail of baseball memorabilia". It has been taken to appraisers and collectors to try to determine the value and they tell me it is priceless and it depends on what the buyer feels it is worth. The collectors I talked to said they couldn't afford something like that. This is the knowledge I have to work with so far and I would appreciate any new information or help I can get on this thing. Thanks. P.S. It is in mint condition and signed by both Bobby Thomson and Ralph Branca.

Im no expert but i would call a auction house to see what they have to say and go that route to get the best price possible. good luck

Are the signatures vintage or modern Sharpies?

MemJF 11-04-2010 09:03 AM

to thekingofclout - The signatures are only about ten years old and I believe signed in sharpie.

to esd10 - I tried calling an auction around me, the best one I could find to which I was recommended by multiple people to try, but they said they couldn't get anything about it through their research and advised me to sell it on ebay for that reason. I find that to be a bad course of action to take with this item. I also tried emailing a couple others and have yet to get any reply. I came here because I had seen a post that it has been seen elsewhere and it seems a place that has a lot of people who know about about this stuff and with that looking for a recommendation of an auction house that might be suitable or another way of selling this that does not involve ebay or something similar to that.

Sounds awesome - I would try REA, Heritage and Goodwin as a couple of major auction houses that could help you. Links to them and others are in the "Vintage Links" section above.

Any chance of getting a picture of it posted on here?

Good luck!

Thank you for the suggestions, I will look into it. I just took this picture today of the program

Gee, I don't even remember saying that back in 2007! It is a cool item. Not sure I would characterize it as priceless, and don't know if it is as rare as only a few known. But auctioning it off is surely the best route to go, since an auction will establish its value. Good luck with it.

Well, all I have is what I have been told by family and my family normally tells each other truth. So it may be that there are more out there but the fact that my searches seem to give me almost nothing on this program I feel it leaves a little credibility to this story. Maybe a different truth will reveal itself in the future as my searching continues, but until then I need to go by this story or I have nothing to go by.
