photo question

Posted By: rob
Hey Guys,

I have this photo of the Andover baseball team from 1899. It reflects the Andover-Exeter score on the top and lists the roster on the bottom. It also says the photo was taken by "hitchcock". There is also a black player which I found surprising.

Anyone have any insight on the photo or a value on these types of items?

thanks,

Rob

Posted By: Dan Bretta
Rob, check out this website and read up on William Clarence Mathews. He was a star player that went on to Harvard after his days at Andover. Great photo with some historical signifigance.

http://www.ivyleaguesports.com/documents/bhm05-nlb.asp

Posted By: davidcycleback
In particular as it has the score for one game, it would appear to be a display or trophy photo. It's uncommon for a mount to have the score of one game, and game scores and team names are typically found handwritten on trophy balls, including early 1900s college footballs. The photo may have been displayed with a tournament trophy and game ball. If it wasn't displayed at the school, it may have been owned by the coach or one of the players. Oversized team photos were often given to the team members, just as trophy footballs could both be displayed in the school's trophy case and given to a team member.
