2nd hand news

Posted By: runscott
Had quite a baseball experience yesterday afternoon - not only did I sit in the 8th row behind home plate to see a fantastic game (Braves beat SF in bottom of 9th), but I sat next to a guy who met Ty Cobb. Turns out he was working in Emory while Ty was spending his final days there. He told me he had a 2 hr conversation with Cobb while he was in his hospital bed, his awards sitting next to him on a night-stand, with a loaded Luger on top of the pile. The guy I was talking with is from Royston - he hasn't seen the Tommy Lee Jones movie, or read the Al Stump book.

Here's a shot from the game - I was VERY close and brought a really nice camera!

Posted By: Gary B.
If the Braves won in the 9th, Bonds did not get a home run in that game, he only pitch hit once, and he did not get a hit. It was the day before that Bonds hit 2 home runs, went 4 for 5 and got 6 RBI's.

So WHAT ON EARTH DID THIS GUY SAY ABOUT COBB? Please give us details of what you remember...

Posted By: runscott
Gary's right - Bonds swung and missed on this one. He then grounded out.

The guy didn't say much about what he and Cobb talked about - only that they talked for a long time. He kept mentioning the loaded Luger, so obviously he was focused on that - none of the Emory personnel were too happy about Cobb having a gun in his room, but he insisted. He also said that Cobb was as sharp as a tack (he was dying from prostate cancer).

We both have the same training coach, so next time I see him I'll try to find out more.
