July - Show & Tell

Posted By: ramram
Thought that maybe we could try a monthly show & tell thread in much the same light as the monthly buy & sell. In my opinion, getting the opportunity to see, and learn about, some of the rare and unusual vintage material is one of the attributes of this site. I know that many collectors are shy about showing their wares but hopefully enough will loosen up and show us some of their proud possessions.

July - Show & Tell

Posted By: ramram
I'll try to start this out with a few early inter-racial team images that I've picked up lately. The first is the 1885 over-sized cabinet with the third earliest colored player in professional baseball, Jack Frye. This image was owned by Frye and given to his brother. It shows him with his Lock Haven (PA) BBC team mates. The next image is a cabinet card of the 1894 Findlay, Ohio team featuring the first colored professional player and first colored major leaguer, Bud Fowler (on the right). The other colored player shown is Grant "Home Run" Johnson. The last image is a RPPC of the 1907 Manitowoc team featuring another early black star, George Wilson. The person that purchased and mailed this post card in 1907 has penned a note at the side of the photo that is typical of that racially insensitive period; "How you like these? The chocolate chip beats them all. July 3/07".

Posted By: ramram
Oh, I suppose it could be had for...say...a million dollars (in my best Dr. Evil tone) or at least an even trade for a Peck & Snyder Cincinnati.

Rob
Posted By: ramram
Why don't you throw your Fleet & Welday Walker images on here. That will cover the first four professional colored ball players. By the way, I oopsed. Bud Fowler was the first black professional player. Fleet was the first black major league player.

Rob
