Standard Catalog Survey

Posted By: Bob Lemke
Those of you who are not currently subscribers to SCD, but who have an interest in the future direction of the Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards are invited to participate in an on-line survey. You can access the survey at www.sportscollectorsdigest.com . After opening the home page, scroll down to the Headlines section and click on the Standard Catalog of Baseball Cards Survey. Follow the easy directions and your valued input will become part of the process by which the big book evolves. Thanks much!

http://surveys.krause.com/?id=263

[edited to add link]

Posted By: AdamBaxter

Just my opinion, but I really appreciate that Bob Lemke and SCD are taking the time to hear input from collectors regarding the Standard Catalog. Open lines of communication between the hobby publications and collectors can only lead to positive things for the hobby and more concise documentation of baseball card issues. Thanks, Bob!

Posted By: Julie Vognar
is there really a chance that you'll break it up? I'd still probably buy all of it, but I wouldn't have to carry all of it around at once...oh joy!

Posted By: Judge Dred
I eliminate about 800+ pages out of the catalog by carefully cutting out (ok so I rip it apart) the Modern Major League (1981 - present) section. I then tape together the Vintage Major League (1869-1980) and Minor League (1888-1969)sections (along with the indexes). This cuts the catalog in half and makes it much easier to carry.

Posted By: J Levine
Please break it up...I do the same as Dredd...I rip out everything post 1979 incl. the post 1979 minor leauge stuff. I then use a large drill press at my middle school and punch three holes in the rest and put it in a four inch binder. Saves weight and time. The rest goes in the recycling bin...I would gladly pay less for the vintage part of the book. Some people may cry greed but I bet the majority of collectors only open half the book anyway--vintage or modern.

-joshua

Posted By: leon
It just took 2 minutes to do the whole survey. It was painless when you just click the link in this thread and breeze through the simple questions. My concern for Krause would be "will they lose revenue" by not having it all together? My guess is no...and maybe even more ....because, if it were split in two, them some folks might buy both and Krause would realize 2 sales...and each seperately could be a tad more than half the cost of the big one...which would/could be a win for everyone. regards

Posted By: Bob Lemke
After six months of doing nothing but pricing updates virtually all day, ever day, it's all a blur. In terms of raw dollars the biggest jump was probably 1914 CJ Mathewson, from $2200 (NM) in the 2004 edition to $40,000. Percentage-wise, Pro's Pizza Cubs left me shaking my head - 1967 color "commons" from $7.50 to $400. Also 1962 Jell-O Bobby Richardson, from $20 to $500. Some E sets are up significantly. Lots of effort was expended to re-adjust the ratio between NM-EX-VG prices in popular early issues. Lots more to go on that account. Is it just me or has the price of EX-MT vintage cards dropped drastically as a percentage of NM?

SURVEY RESULTS are pouring in, on-line version has over 100 respondents; mail's just starting to arrive. Those responding are remarkably homogeneous is what they want in the book. But all I can do is package the results and give them to the bosses with my recommendations.

I'm off tomorrow to prepare for a 10-day trip to Western Pa. for my daughter's wedding. Back in Iola on the 22nd, then off to SportsFest on the 25th.

I can't express often enough how much I value the input of this group in my efforts to put together the best possible catalog.
