Posted By: slacks
Often there appears to be two bidders taking an auction through the ceiling. But you cannot say with certainty that if they had not been present, the card would have sold for $160.

In addition to the potential bidders who first noticed the auction when the bids were above their maximum bids, how do you know that there weren't one, two, or ten bidders with $900 snipe bids that weren't accepted?

That's not to say that this particular auction wasn't hijacked by two dueling bidders-- in this case it seems likely -- but in general, sniping has taken away the ability to objectively judge the popularity and depth of an eBay auction's other bidders.

What is rare about this card?
Posted By: Marc S.
I do agree that the card may have gone very high had there not been one of the top two bidders involved. This does happen quite frequently, as Leon so succinctly illustrated.

I was pointing out, however, that there are numerous times that two (egos, snipe hounds, set collectors) drive card prices to silly levels that would definitely not be realized without that second bidder. The best example is the 1967 Topps Don Demeter PSA 8 that just sold for $1,175. That is just silly.

http://offer.ebay.com/ws3/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewBids&item=2792790244
