Vintage Baseballs in recent Leland's auction
Posted By: runscott
I was very much interested in this lot of baseballs, but dropped out at $1,700, as I just don't know enough about market value. I thought this lot had a wide range of balls with a very interesting history - thoughts on any of the individual balls or their value? I'm still looking for a 1905-15 era ball as part of a "uniform/equipment" display I'm building and thought a few of these would have done the job nicely.

http://www.lelands.com/bid.aspx?lot=648&auction=311

Posted By: Hankron
'Vintage Baseballs and Price Guide' by Joe Phillips and Dave Bushing is 20 page pamplet that is a nice intro/guide to early baseballs. Though I am not able to comment on the pricing accuracy, it does have charts for rarity and price ranges. You likely can get a copy from either of the authors or perhaps MastroNet.

Posted By: Aaron Michiel
Yes, Bushing's guide is highly-recommedned. The prices are a bit inflated, but otherwise it does a great job of ducumenting league president and style changes and variations for both OAL and ONL baseballs and boxes (and a few assorted oddballs thrown in).

Word of warning though, the guide is intended only for "unused" baseballs, not for game-used ones (I don't think there's a mention in the guide at all).

I personally collect "unused" baseballs (and only that to the extent that I wanted a few samples to add to my display). The mintier and more pristine, the better. Other than my Giles and Heydler, I also have a Ban Johnson c. 1925 OAL Reach baseball that I won in last April's Mastro Auction.

I'm not a collector of game-used or trophy baseballs, but I appreciate the topic being raised, nonetheless.

Posted By: runscott
I'm mostly interested in 1905-15 official NL or AL balls, beat-up is great as long as they can be id'd.
