Posted By: <b>scott brockelman</b><p>i have a question as to why mayo football and baseball cards which are black backed, unlike the boxers which are on cream colored stock, are sometimes found with a "silver" type of spot filler on the back where there are paper flaws on the back, i have a few and have seen others that are very consistently the same silver colored touch up and mine came from many different places. i am thinking this was some type of factory job and not a contemporary collector's doing.<BR><BR>any thoughts? does anyone on the board own some of these. i will try to add a scan later. ALSO psa & sgc have graded these cards with the silver touch up.<BR><BR>scott

By the way I am making progress on the Ramly Knight and I think I can get the oc off my 7, if so the other one is yours. I see many ads for lower grade Mayos (especially in Lipset auctions, for some reason) saying "black magic marker" has been used to attempt repair.<BR><BR>Never heard of the silver before--and grading companies grading them, too!

Posted By: <b>scgaynor</b><p>That is a very good question, I have had a few with Silver touch ups on the back as well. The silver is almost the same color, and texture as those silver paint pens used for signing autographs by modern day players.

Posted By: <b>Hankron</b><p>True story.<BR><BR>During WWII, British airplanes would drop thin stips of metal from the airplanes to fool the German radar. Following the war, the British goverment was left with an incredible surplus of these metal longs strips. Eventually a company bought the surplus and many of the strips became the inside stock for British tobacco cards. If you get one of these trading cards and crack them, you can see that they are metal inside.

However, I now like the flak counter-measures story. <BR>Where were these cards produced and distributed ??<BR>(I always assumed Boston-NY area).

Posted By: <b>scott brockelman</b><p>i do not think it is from packaging as the silvering is always in low area's almost like factory peel spots filled in, and always on the border, perhaps dull cutting blades? as can be seen from most mayo football the left edge usually has a scalloped look. <BR><BR>you will however find remnants of the dark purple package adhered to the front of the cards and that is definitely from the pack

Posted By: <b>murcerfan</b><p>I've got some with some purple residue on the fronts as well. Seeing as these cards were printed (I hope)<BR>50 years before WWII, I no longer like the Radar counter-measures theory, albeit an interesting tidbit I never heard before.<BR>It is still odd to me.
