Grading OJ's

Posted By: runscott
Leon had questioned how a grading company would treat a rough edge cut on an OJ. Apparently they aren't at all concerned - is this standard, or an anomaly?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2753636416

Posted By: halleygator
As best I can tell ...

the grading companies are not too "critical" of a rough-cut egde if they are convinced that it left the factory that way.

I have owned several PSA 8 cards with rough-cut egdes ... but then again, maybe they would have been 9's or 10's without the rough edge??

But those were NOT Old Judge cards.

Posted By: Tom Boblitt
If you look at almost ALL the O-Pee-Chee issues (hockey and baseball) from the 1960's-1970's they have those rough edges. No offense to Eliot but I think they must have had some unsharpened cutters up there in London, Ontario where O-Pee-Chee was. The grading companies typically will not downgrade those issues too bad for that type of cut. I've also seen those type cuts on 1950's and 1960's Topps cards still get PSA8 or higher SGC grades too. I think the assessment of if it came from the factory that way, they will grade it as such.

Posted By: Trevor Hocking
Well I have a little experience in grading Old Judges. I have rarely seen that kind of a cut on Old Judge's. They are usually very smooth and symmetrical. I think that rough edge on most cards would have made it an 80 but just look at the photo quality. If the edge was sharp that card would be an 88 for sure, but there is what looks to be a tobacco stain of some kind on the right hand side as well. I will have to say that because of the world class photo it deserves to be in a 84, but I do wish they would put that much consideration on photo quality in their grading for all their grades. When it comes to SGC it seems they have the best gauge when it comes to the N172's. Here is a link to my SGC 84 and 88 for comparison. I don't know how to post an image. If some could help me with that I would greatly appreciate it.

http://www.sgccardregistry.com/images.asp?cardid=46931&usetid=737

http://www.sgccardregistry.com/images.asp?cardid=47317&usetid=737

Trevor Hocking

Posted By: Elliot
Rich, Scott---not wanting to upset either one of you , let me say that you are both correct. If the url of the image ends in .jpg and you have checked off the formatted text box, then all you need to do is type the url address in and then the software will post the picture. No need for the tags. If the tags are used then the same result will occur.
However, if the url does NOT end in .jpg then the tags are necessary for the software to recognize that it is an image. It is also possible that the software recognizes other endings beside .jpg that are typically used for images, but I'm not 100% sure.

Posted By: warshawlaw
but that edge is not nice. too bad.

FYI, a few years ago, when the grading thing really took off, I was told by more than one PSA authorized dealer that slightly rough edges was a plus because it showed the card had not been handled much.

IMHO, slightly rough edges only means that the cutting blade was running out of useful life when the card was made. Like a razor blade; the last use is the one that rips the skin.

Posted By: botn
How about that factory cut on the top edge of the 14 CJ Cobb? Unless it is an illusion due to the way the card sits in the holder due to a slight curl.

Guess this was a time when grading was a little more lenient. Centering appears to be more in the 7 range.
