I think I'm Glad I didn't Win this?
Posted By: Lee Behrens
I was bidding on this auction:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2731459215&category=31 718&rd=1

I was going to up the bid until I noticed the PSA label. Is this a legitimate label? I have never seen this type set used before.

I think I'm Glad I didn't Win this?
Posted By: Brian H
It looks like a very early PSA label -- but what strikes me as especially odd is that I thought that a PSA 4 was VG-EX ...... But I haven't gotten enough sleep lately so maybe I'm wrong...

I think I'm Glad I didn't Win this?
Posted By: Anonymous
It is an extremely early PSA label - PSA in the VERY early days had the scale of 5 Ex 4 VG 3 Good 2 Fair 1 Poor - this was 10+ years ago, and I doubt more than a handful of cards are out there with grades that haven't been reholdered...

I think I'm Glad I didn't Win this?
Posted By: MW
I submitted many cards to PSA in the "early" days and I've never seen a scale where the number "4" was assigned to the condition "Very Good." Even the earliest SMRs list VG as "3." Just look at the first card that was ever graded by PSA -- the T206 Wagner -- it was assigned a grade of NM-MT 8. If one uses that as a starting point and counts backwards, it is obvious that "4" is VG-EX, not VG. Given the relatively low value of the card, I find it doubtful that the image was altered. It is possible, however, that PSA made an error on the label.

I think I'm Glad I didn't Win this?
Posted By: MW
The typeset was the earliest used by PSA. There are probably somewhere on the order of several thousand graded cards still in these types of "older" PSA holders.

I think I'm Glad I didn't Win this?
Posted By: Brian H
Assuming one is playing the graded card game wouldn't you be well-advised to take these earlier PSA (or SGC for that matter) graded cards with their old labels and have them re-holdered (with the same serial number and grade) with the new labels because it is commonly believed that the grading standards have become much higher over time. Most people can identify an old label; many fewer, I would think can identify an older serial number....
