N172 Old Judge info
Posted By: Adam J. Baxter
Heloo all,

I have Lew Lipset's Encyclopedia (1,2,3 combined volume) and have read it more times then I can remember. I am also aware of his Old Judge newsletter the complete run 1985-1994 - which I haven't seen. Other then these two publications, are there any others that deal with N172's, particularly something that has been updated since Lipset's last newsletter. Are there any other publications or websites that deal with N172? I have often thought that a website about N172's that showed scans of all the known examples and all the known poses of each player would be a great help for collectors, a kind of online Old Judge archive. Not the same as T206 Museum, but in the same spirit. Collectors could perhaps submit images and provide updates on discoveries, etc. I would think that it would be easier and possibly less expensive to keep updating a website as opposed to a book. Kind of surprised that hasn't happened yet. Anyone have any thoughts about this?

Posted By: John(z28jd)
There used to be a website with a lot of scans, and they were trying to get all of them, not just pose, even every variation.Right before the website went down i talked to them about submitting a few scans they didnt have, but i would say the guy had at least 500 different scans, maybe more......I would love to see a site dedicated to old judges and would be more than happy to share any scans and knowledge i have about them(just in case anyone gets an idea from adams post)

Next to T206, what other early issue offers so many possibilites to the vintage collector? I have seen many publications on "The Monster", but very few on Old Judge, which surprised me because I see so many people collecting them. Lew Lipset said in his encyclopedia that the Old Judge set is literally impossible to complete, that a person could collect individual examples for a lifetime and never have them all. I can't speak for everyone else, but I like that type of a challenge!

Posted By: leon
Unfortunately a lot of Old Judge collectors are "old school" in my opinion. They like to keep their collections secret (I guess). Also, as I have been told numerous times before, knowledge is money. If there was an Old Judge site I think that many collectors (that could help with the site) would think they will lose money on sales or buys......just my 2 cents ....btw, I am not old school and like to share and compare ...cards and knowledge....best regards
