When collectors have too much money

Posted By: Cy
I know that most on the board deal primarily in pre-war cards. But I saw these four auctions and I am amazed.

Here are four cards for the Topps 1957 set, all PSA 10 and all deserving of this grade. Each one is spectacular. However, each card books for $8! You could go to a major card show, and get a spectacular card of any of these guys for under $20. You probably won't get as good as here, but it would save you $700-$800. I realize that one can buy what one wants, but these are incredible prices (in my opinion) for common commons.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2709754093&category=16 271

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2709753483&category=16 271

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2709752994&category=16 271

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2709752312&category=16 271

Just my thoughts,

Cy

When collectors have too much money

Posted By: Hankron
Perhaps I'm a Rube, but I've never understood the super duper premiums placed on 'Gem Mint' cards, whether it was a Michael Jordan Rookie or a 1950s Topps Common. This is in particular as even the best graders have a measurable margin of error in assigning grades. I ususally look at sales prices like this in this way: for the money someone just payed for a Topps common, he could have gotten a Hall of Famer Game Used bat or a decent T206 Ty Cobb. I may be in the minority on some boards, but I would rather than the bat or the T206 Cobb over a 1957 Topps Ray Jablonski.

On the other hand, it's the winner's money and he can do whatever he wants with it.

Posted By: Brian Weisner

Hi Elliot,
Take a look at the other auctions by this seller. 1526.00 for a Psa 5 Speaker? I've got a Sgc 70 for a 1000.00 for any of the under bidders.

Hi David
I agree I'll take a Cobb bat off shoulder over most cards especially from the 50's, Magic 10 or not.

Be well all brian

When collectors have too much money

Posted By: Albie O'Hanian
There is quite a battle on the PSA set registry for 1957 topps. The opportunity to collect some PSA 10's would certainly help the set rating. Interestingly on all four auctions there were at least 3 bidders willing to pay more than $745 for each of the cards and on the last auction there were 4 buyers. It was not like two bidders got carried away or let their ego get the best of them.

Posted By: petecld
Tom,

$110 for a 9 and $600-700 for a 10 - That is standard buying practice for PSA collectors. That's the price you pay for being a numbers collector and not a card collector.

Considering the difference in condition between the 9 and 10 grades it seems like such a waste of money.

Of course the same would be true for a SGC 96 vs SGC 100

Posted By: T206Monsta
It doesn't really matter. Value to him is obviously the price he pays. He's the kind of spender that keeps the economy going in rough times. He's obviously got cake and he's gonna eat it in everyone's face. To him, the cards must be worth it. More power to him. Maybe he sleeps with them and they bring him much joy. Move over poor people!
