Posted By: Wade
I am in need of some assistance from the knowledgeable patrons of this board. I myself do not contribute much to this board as I am new to the vintage world, but I follow the posts left here daily. At the national this year I bought a few back copies of VCBC, and in issue #6 I found something that I don't understand. In an article on pages 20-23 by Lew Lipset he states that the M116 Sporting Life Set was issued in 24 series. In this article he says, "All of the backs are printed in blue ink with one exception. Actually there are 12 exceptions, as Series 3 appears only with the back that states "When you think of Baseball, etc." and is known with black or blue printing. The collector who obtains both black and blue printing of any card in Series 3 will notice subtle differences in the face of the card. For example.......Home Run Baker's cards use the same size photos but the one with blue printing shows a bright pink shirt, whereas the variation with black printing has a dull light brown colored shirt. All 12 series 3 cards have these type variations."
Now, to my question. I have two M116's, and they are both of the player Wolter(NY). According to the checklist on page 22 of this article, Wolter was issued in series 12, however, both of my cards have the "when you think of Baseball" back. One is blue and the other is black. Unlike the Baker card that Lipset mentioned, my Wolter has a bright pink shirt with a black printed back, and the gray/brown shirt has a blue printed back. Is this article outdated, or has new information been obtained on this set, or do I have some weird variation? Any help would be greatly appreciated, and besides, any card related talk would probably be welcomed at this point. Don't you all agree.

Posted By: Julie Vognar
I had a small collection of M116s. One of them had a black back. I had Lipset's 3 books, but it never occurred to me to look there. I kept worrying that the black-backed card was a fake.

Whoever bought them gobbled them all up without so much as a double-take about the black back. (Now, according to you, there are quite a few of them.)

Sometimes you don't know what you really like till it's gone. I never replaced my M116s--so I guess I didn't like them very much. Another interesting by-product of having to practically start over again: Almost all of my T206s ex-mint or better (remember nothing was slabbed in those days) were bought up. Ther vg-exs and exs were left with me (and one Cobb, bat off, and a Bender with trees Carolina Brights back that I refused to part with). Came the middle of the nineties, and even moreso now, I'd rather have T206s in vg-ex and ex! Most of the ones you wound yourself on the corners of have been altered.

Sorry to bend your ear so much.
