B F Hanes tobacco album information needed

Posted By: Keith O'Leary
I bought this album on ebay last week. I poured through the ACC and have found no reference to this company. The covers are hard like a book, there are 6 accordian style pages (with inside front and back cover plates), and shows scenes of cities like Boston, New York, Philadelphia etc. On the back is pictured the company building with "Model Tobacco Works" displayed prominently. This isn't the company that made Model tobacco is it? I'm not really a tin collector, but isn't Model Tobacco 20th century? The litho company is identified also (don't have the album with me, but its something Eng Co NY). I'm assuming Eng stands for engraving. Also states across the bottom on the back "Send Us 100 Our Tin Tags and Receive One of These Albums". I did find reference to a P H Hanes tobacco company which was founded by brothers Pleasant and J Wesley Hanes in the 1800s and sold to R J Reynolds in 1900 for $175,000. The family is the one that owns Hanes underwear and Leggs pantyhose today and is based in Winston-Salem NC. The B F Hanes Tobacco Co was in Winston NC which is stated on the front of the album. I also found that P H Hanes made Gilt Edge, Man's Pride, Red Rabbit, and Speckled Beauty Plug tobacco. In addition to that, I also found in the ACC (don't have it with me either) a 19th century card issue for Gilt Edge cigarettes with manufacturer unknown. I can't seem to tie all this information together and was wondering if anyone could help or has heard of either of these companies, or better yet, have anything with the company name on it? Here is the album:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2112962878

and once again, thanks for any help. I know quite a few members of the Hanes family& will try to find out more info. I knew the Hanes started in the Scrap Tobacco buisness, but didn't know they inserted cards into there packages. later brian

Posted By: Keith O'Leary
David, it is my opinion that these albums have been undervalued forever. The lithography is unequaled and almost all the albums contain the complete card set they are partnered with. In addition to showing the cards, they usually have several full plates of related graphics too. Although the sports albums can command 4 figures, when you compare that to individual cards from the same sets costing as much or even more, they hardly seem expensive at all. In closing, it has been my experience they are a rarer breed of dog then the insert cards they highlight.
