1928 Tharps error- Mr. Lemke
Posted By: nolemmings (Todd)
I recently saw an EBay auction for a 1928 Tharp's Ice Cream William H. Terry. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1836645036
The new SCD catalogue states the card depicts Kent Greenfield. The card actually depicts Zeb Terry, as it shows the identical photo of Zeb from the 1916 Boston Store set (except for the airbrushed White Sox logo).

Strange how Tharps would use such an old photo of the wrong guy, when Bill had been established in the league for years, and Zeb hadn't played for years.

1928 Tharps error- Mr. Lemke
Posted By: John Wojak
Tharps used a lot of old photos. I believe that the Ruth photo is actually the same photo as the 1919 M101-6 Sporting News supplements, or a very similar picture, of a slim Ruth warming up as a pitcher wearing what appears to be a Boston uniform, at least by the socks (a very similar picture to his e121 set of 80 pitching pose). Ruth's Tharps card definitely does not depict the more portly 1928 version of his physique.

1928 Tharps error- Mr. Lemke
Posted By: Bob Lemke
Thanks much for the heads-up on the Terry photo confusion. I don't know where the identification as Greenfield ever originated. We've been doing a lot of research into the Tharp's "family" of card issues circa 1928, including York, W502, etc. Still a lot of work to be done to reconcile players sharing the same card numbers, etc. We're putting the finishing touches on page proofs now for the 2003 Standard Catalog. We've added nearly 50 pages to the Vintage section.
