Posted By: warshawlaw
I'm not sure I like these at all. I know that a "real" auction is private, but I trust the integrity of (most) auctioneers not to shill bid on their items. I don't trust the integrity of (many) ebay auctioneers in this regard. Your thoughts?

Although I wouldn't bid on private auctions by just any ebay seller, I don't really have a problem with it - just snipe at the end with your high bid and you should be okay!

Posted By: brian
I agree Scott, I don't usually bid in private auctions, but I have purchased alot of quality items from Gaynor with no problems. I can understand some dealers wanting to keep spam dealers away from there customers, but most people ignore unsolicited messages anyway.
Unfortunatly shady dealers like PSA-CARD use the private auctions to keep anyone from warning there victims of the trimmed PRO graded cards the slab and sell. Ebay would be better off without the privacy option. later brian
Posted By: leon
Then I realized that if I put another high end item up I might do it. I have nothing to hide but it would protect the bidders. I was thinking if I wanted to sell a 4-5 figure card on ebay, and people saw who was bidding on it, then they might make a decision based on who is bidding. I can tell you I have had conversations with board members in the last few days that hate it when they see a few well known, well heeled bidders bidding on something.....I won't name any names either way. I think as long as it is a trusted seller you just bid as high as you want at the end and don't worry about it....just my sheckel worth.....best regards all...

Posted By: runscott
There are a couple of bidders, who when I see they are bidding, I know it is useless so I don't put a bid in at all. In fact, one of them won a card from me recently at a very, very low price and might have scared away some potential bidders. As a result, last Sunday I started running auctions with much higher opening bids - it cost more, but I can't afford to take any more big hits on graded cards. But an alternative I hadn't thought of would be to have 'private auctions'.

Posted By: Julie Vognar
As soon as I realized how Gaynor worked (24-hour-a-day auctions, some private, some not), I wasn't worried. I won some Mullin original artwork from him, and that silly CIA Moe Berg poster (it's quite attractive), both of which didn't happen to be private, but i would have bid if they had been.

I have noticed that some people selling pornography use private auctions, which doesn't bother me; I'm just not interested.

Oh yes, he's one who didn't leave me feedback! How could he have time?

Seeing I was the underbidder on lot 1828045654 (e120/121 lot), the only thing that worries me is not knowing who I made pay-up.
