SGC now providing pre-screening
Posted By: Elliot
It's only for post 1990 cards, but they charge $2 to pre-screen it, and only encapsulate it if it grades 96 or better, in which case they charge $6. Two ways to look at this---1) it's a good thing 2) the cynic would say that a lot more cards will be graded 96 now. I wonder if they will be expanding this service to older cards?

SGC now providing pre-screening
Posted By: Jason Kislack
For all cards that are borderline, will there now be a conscious or unconscious chance that the card will be bumped to the higher grade? Who knows -- but it seems clear that SGC will not make any money on the $2 reviews -- so they truly need to churn out a bunch of the $6 grades to make it worth their while.

I'm just concerned that this sort of service will have the unintentional consequence of too many borderline cards getting passed through to the higher grade.

Let's hope that similar type service levels do not extend their way back to our pre-war arena.

Posted By: leon
If this policy goes back to our vintage arena SGC will either go broke or be a laughing stock of the industry...much like PRO and NASA.....I don't think they will go there and if they do they will have a whole lot of $2 invoices.....and while I appreciate the need to make a profit and stay in business I don't see how this can be good for the modern card hobby or SGC in general....guess we'll see lot's more 96 and above shiney, refracter, insert, 1 of 1,000,000, collector commemortaive, smiley cards...best regards.....

SGC now providing pre-screening
Posted By: jeff
it seems like they assume people don't want a card slabbed unless it is 96+ (which may be true), but that has been true all along, and many people have their screwdrivers/hammers/bandsaws ready for that purpose.

interesting implication, though: they are basically saying that the grade/authentication is worth $2, and the holder is worth $6. perhaps it is to them...probably not to the majority of collectors.

just kidding about the bandsaws (i think).

Jeff
