Trimmed M116s- damn, getting to be a habit!
Posted By: TBob
Well after moaning about Mr. Florida's pint sized Sporting Life (he never answered my email about it by the way)here the other day, I received a couple of HOFer M116s in the mail. One measures exactly 2 3/4" and the other, yup, 2 5/8" Is there a "1/8 inch rule" which applies here????? What about you guys who have large collections of Sporting Life cards? Have you found that much size variation?
Thanks, I guess I need to stick with caramel and tobacco cards.

Posted By: jay behrens
email isn't gonna do anything for you with those guys. I got my refurnd for the trimmed M116s by calling their toll free number and talking to them. If they ask for your name and say they will call you back, say that you will be happy to wait. They will take care of you right away becuase they don't want to run up their phone bill trying to blow you off, hehe.

Jay

Posted By: Tim
I have a Matty M116 that measures 2-9/16" X 1-15/32" and a Lajoie that measures 2-19/32" X 1-17/32".

The Matty was popped out of a PRO Holder and the Lajoie was purchased from Mr. Florida. Either way trimmed or not, I have stopped collecting the M116 set due to all the fuss and am not sure what I will do with either card. Any takers?

Tim

Posted By: Brett Domue
Tom,

Here are some t/b measurements for some of my M116's. All are consistent within 1/16", and none appear trimmed. I am confident to say the 2-3/4 in the SCD is incorrect, and the size should be 2-5/8, the same as T206 (with a 1/16" safe variance) From this group of those I have at 2-9/16, some may have been a hair over that size that I slightly rounded down, but none seemed smaller and were rounded up.

Brett

Baker Black Back - 2-9/16
Bender Blue - 2-5/8
Bender Pastel - 2-9/16
Bresnahan Pastel - 2-5/8
Brown Blue - 2-5/8
Chance Blue - 2-19/32
Chance Pastel - 2-9/16
Clarke Blue Back - 2-9/16
Cobb Blue - 2-5/8
Collins Blue - 2-9/16
Collins Pastel - 2-9/16
Flick - 2-9/16
Hooper - 2-5/8
Jennings Blue - 2-5/8
Plank - 2-9/16
Wallace - 2-9/16

Brett Domue
okeedokee@pipeline.com
http://members.aol.com/METSBWD/wantlist.htm

Posted By: warshawlaw
I only collect these cards in lower grades (I prefer a slightly worked card when it comes to old time cards)hence with a good deal of hard to fake corner wear, and my experience has been that they are the same size as T206, within a 1/16" margin. I have had several SGC graded and all were graded without question.

I know you probably know this, but I will say it anyway. Unless the card is trimmed on all sides, take the card outside in the daylight (but not in direct sun) and face north (northern light is preferred by artists for giving the truest colors) and review the edges for variations in shading under a magnifier. I have found this to be nearly foolproof in IDing alterations.

Posted By: M.E.
I have found when attempting to detect a trimmed card, if you view it during a full moon, at the stroke of midnight, with your rear-end facing to the east, any trimming will become at once apparent.

Posted By: Tbob
I just got an email from the Florida seller, providing his address so I could rteturn the most suspiciously short of the cards. Providing that a refund is forthcoming, he may be changing his return policy.
