Breaking open PSA holders

Posted By: Stu
A while back I bought a PSA 8 1934 Goudey Lou Gehrig for $20,500. I did not like the way it looked in the holder so I broke it open. I recently needed money so I sold it to a dealer, the best he could do was $14,000 because we differed on the condition. Let this be a warning to those who buy PSA graded cards then foolishly remove them! Stu.

Stu. >>

I wish people would get this "A holder automatically makes the card worth more" notion out of their heads. Not ALL times will a slabbed card be worth than an ungraded copy.

Right now, I can't see a dealer paying $14k for that card unless they thought it would have a good shot to 9 (as the market for that card in an 8 has dropped significantly). Even if you kept it in a PSA 8 - you would still be taking a bath, so I'm not sure I would be quick to blame it on the "crack", but rather, on the unforgiving market.

I was very confident of a 9 on re-submission.
2. It would be a permanent part of my collection.
3. If I "didn't like the way it looked", crack it and submit to SGC for nice "display" appearance.

If I cracked it and realized I needed the money, I would consign it to a major sports auction house and let them gain access to the players who will throw the bucks my way; possibly more than 14K, maybe not; in today's market. I'm not too experienced in the cardboard art market later that 1916, but I certainly wouldn't have taken the card to a dealer and expect to get anything close to what I paid for it.

Just idle thoughts on a day off work.

Ben.

Posted By: John Wojak
Stu, if you felt that the difference between what you paid for it and what you were able to sell it for was due to the fact that you cracked it out of its slab, then how come you didn't try to resubmit it to PSA or SGC for a new NrMt/Mt slab? Then you wouldn't have been selling it as a raw card where the dealer would haggle with you over the grade.

I tend to agree with Steve (Vorthian) and benge that the real reason for the difference between what you paid and what you got for it now is the drop in the market price for 8s.

Gimme a nice "3" or "4" of that card any day - it still looks great, I can afford it (plus a heck of a lot of other nice cards for the difference), I can sell it easily, and so what if the market drops by a third, what do I lose, $250?? I can live with that. I don't want to have to worry that if the market drops for a particular card I will lose $6,000 on it.
