December Pick-Up Thread
2 Attachment(s)
Don’t know I’ve ever started one of these ….
A Danny Hoffman is one I had not seen an example of since collecting nothing but Howe’s stamped cards in 2007. Now just 97 away from having a complete set with Howe’s stamp. Attachment 678558 Attachment 678559 |
With all the auctions going on, can't wait to see this month's eye candy.

Bought in November, arrived in December. The last 2 for my Grover Hartley collection (see the other thread for more info). The Merchants Bakery is the only one known to exist to my knowledge and actually came from a fellow Net54 member (thank you Mark).

First card of this type. Successful Farming - Zimmerman. I think it’s a promotional set.

Awesome Goudey Williams. I traded mine away just before the prices skyrocketed. Or, more likely, just after they skyrocketed but before I realized it.

Forgive the post-war but this was my Christmas present to myself this year:

deviating from cards a bit, but couldnt pass up Jim Gilliam's actual contract from his 2nd yr in the negro leagues; from the estate of the GM of the team.

Buy the card not the holder. Centering is off top to bottom but it’s pretty dead on left to right and it’s a captivating image in general. I like to think this card features more of it than usual.

Great ‘39 Ted Williams rookie! Underrated card. Nice p/u Mike

Since the pics are busted, and I don’t currently use a hosting site, I’ll just have to post the new pickup verbally. I’ll keep my fingers crossed that the picture issues get ironed out soon, as I need to do some serious selling on the BST of some things i have upgraded the last few months to pay back the account for this purchase. My wife was going through the REA catalog to see if there was any fun Cardinals stuff as a Christmas present for her dad, and actually remembered how much the opening bid was on what I won, so I’m not going to be able to downplay this purchase!!
I am the proud new owner of the two L1’s in REA last night. Being in the land of no real shows all my life, I’ve never even seen an L1 in person, so these will be a brand new experience for me when I get to open the box! I’m pretty excited to have these guys coming in a couple weeks! Hopefully pics will be good to go by the time they get here and I can share. 1912 L1 Large Leather Premium #127 Ty Cobb 1912 L1 Large Leather Premium #116 John McGraw I may try to do a full framed display the wall with the McGraw. After I pay the account back, I’ll take a look for a McGraw T3, Silk Premium and maybe a nice autograph or something to go with. I always have a hard time parting with cash I could put towards my love of T206 HOFer front/back combos, but feel pretty good about adding these two L1’s and will force myself to clean up the collection a little to fund them! I was bummed I missed the Walsh that sold last year and kept thinking about it, so feel good about finally landing these two. I’m looking forward to seeing (or just reading) what you all grabbed! Enjoy the day, Bob |

Here are REA's scans. Hope you don't mind me posting them. https://photos.imageevent.com/mhgt/h...large/cobb.jpg https://photos.imageevent.com/mhgt/h...rge/mcgraw.jpg |
Hey Mike! That’s for adding the pics for me! Always great to hear from you, it’s been way too long. I hope you and the family are doing well! Come on back to the T206 backs game, always fun wheeling and dealing with you.
Thanks again, Bob |
Wow that is awesome
Congrats |

Attachment 678876 Interestingly enough, Bridwell may have been with Nashville in Spring training of 1916, but he never played for them. In 1916 and 1917, he played for the Atlanta Crackers of the Southern Assoc. Fun fun, Scott  |

1952 Num Num

Picked up this signed Steve Gromek 1952 Num Num Potato Chip card ( regional set for the Cleveland Indians)
Love everything about this card( a little oversized, check…signature of player , check) , but it is a shame PSA calls it a TRADING CARD……it is a righteous Num Num card. How can I see this on eBay and determine it is a real card , not a reprint , but the Num Nut who slabbed it couldn’t. I see this quite frequently lately, especially on cards with signatures. BUT…..I’m thrilled to have it, Steve Gromek is a part of the baseball integration story…a BIG part and no…I’m not reslabbing it. I know what it is and that’s all that matters. |

Added my seventh different Diamond Matchbook of Carl Hubbell, specifically the first one on the left, which is his 1934 U1 green variation. Weirdly, there is no master set checklist covering all of these issues, so some guest work is involved in terms of knowing just how many more Carl Hubbell matchbooks there are. I do know I need the green U3-1 and the blue U4, and I suspect/hope that makes all of them. |

Pretty scare card of Spahn, very regional. Love the card but hate the holder. The laziness of PSA never ceases to amaze me.

From The Collector Connection's last auction. I don't think this one ever made a new pick ups thread. I always like red print on back of our cards and this one has really nice printing..

A Black Sox arrived in town today. 1915 Chick Gandil……..a card that has more love than Chick deserves. And the horizontal cards are nothing but cool!

I already posted this in the LOTG thread, but it is now in hand.

Great items everyone.
Jeff, love those type 1 Cobb photo's. They're terrific! Lastly, I was the underbidder on your gorgeous E103 Cobb. Sorry that I cost you a couple bumps in bids. We seem to like the same stuff ;) Keeping the type 1 photo theme going. The Big Train just arrived. https://photos.imageevent.com/threet.../IMG_9329.jpeg |

Got my REA winnings, the Freeman's auction box of 1950's-60's and went to a coin show and local card show today.
Picked one item to be the highlight... runner up was the Gilligan's Island set from REA :) although there were a few other significant items in the REA box. Presents much nicer in hand, the scanner makes every fold look like the grand canyon. |
