ESPN piece on Bill Belichick

I thought this was well done.

I totally agree, noting that there is likely a sizable portion of an entire generation who have never literally read an article of that length without the help of some sort of AI summary tool. TLDR and all that.

Bill Belichick is a coaching genius. If I were a high school football player, I can't think of any reason why I wouldn't want to play for Belichick in college. Especially if I were a marginal prospect.

Yeah, it's weird with the girlfriend and all that, but he's not the first successful older man who's fallen into that trap. But it's a red herring.

The author understands him well. The best prose in the piece is where he refers to Belichick's ability to say nothing while convincing you he has said something profound as "both gift and art."

My favorite Belicheck trivia fact is that his NFL record without Brady is below .500. On the other hand Brady's record without Belicheck is pretty good.

Harry Carson thinks the world of Belichick as a defensive coaching genius. If Harry Carson says he's great, that's good enough for me.

But I agree that Brady made him the head coach he was. No doubt about that.

Then again Belichick had the wisdom and courage to keep Brady as the starter after Bledsoe (a star QB in his own right) was available again. At the time this was very controversial and went against the conventional wisdom that a starting QB could not lose his job to an injury.

The Patriots went 11-5 in 2008 with Brady out the entire season.

They also went 3-1 during Brady’s 2016 suspension, with the loss being when the backup was injured and the third-stringer was playing with an injured throwing hand.
