Best one last name team
Weird things that run through my mind...
What is the best starting 9 you can put together with one last name. Robinson? Williams? Martinez? Who else you got? I'll start with Robinson: C - Wilbert Robinson 6.7 1b - Eddie Robinson 14.8 2b - Jackie Robinson 63.9 ss - Craig Robinson -2.7 lol 3b - Brooks Robinson 78.3 of - Frank Robinson 107.2 of - Bill Robinson 7.6 of - Floyd Robinson 17.9 sp - Don Robinson 17.4 311.1 if WAR is the most important. I was trying to use players at their primary positions, I could get creative with guys who made occasional appearances at other positions and improve the number. |

C: Will 1B: Dominic 2B:George SS: Ozzie 3B: Al OF: Lonnie OF: Reggie OF: Dwight (Sr.) P: Lee |
Jackson (WAR in parenthesis)
C: Conor Jackson (2.2) 1B: Ron Jackson (7.2) 2B: Damian Jackson (6.6) SS: Travis Jackson (44.2) 3B: Randy Jackson (12.4) OF: Reggie Jackson (74) OF: Joe Jackson (62.2) OF: Austin Jackson (21.9) SP: Larry Jackson (52) Total WAR = 282.7 Honorable Mention: Bo Jackson (8.3) Johnson would probably have a higher total WAR simply because of Walter, but be a little less balanced. Jones would be up there too. But it may be hard to top Robinson |
C Charles Johnson 22.6
1B Cliff Johnson 16.2 2B Davey Johnson 27.5 3B Billy Johnson 14.4 SS Howard Johnson 22.2 LF Bob Johnson 55.7 CF Lance Johnson 30.2 RF Roy Johnson 17.4 RHP Walter Johnson 167.8 LHP Randy Johnson 101.1 Total 475.1 WAR |
Rodriguez would get you a pretty great team if you started with ARod and Pudge.
Hernandez as well, starting with Keith and Felix. Jones or Gibson would be interesting too. |
Cool thread - Would be tough to top Johnson so I thought maybe another route with unique last names (According to baseball reference)
But the list got stupid long real fast: Ruth Gehrig Mantle Koufax Musial Spahn Foxx Speaker Anson Lajoie Hornsby Campanella Bench Seaver Killebrew Ohtani Drysdale Munson Winfield Carew Maris Medwick McGwire Kaline Kershaw Marichal Gehringer Frisch etc. etc. Baines 🙂 |

Did we do Williams yet? Ted and Billy is a pretty good start. Matt at 3B. Ken in the OF.
|
Nobody took up Williams and I think I can beat Johnson...
C - George Williams 1.5 1b - Billy Williams 63.7 2b - Jimmy Williams 32.5 ss - Chester Williams 9.2 3b - Matt Williams 46.6 OF - Ted Williams 121.8 OF - Bernie Williams 49.6 OF - Ken Williams 42.7 P - Woody Williams 30.2 397.8 WAR EDIT - Was working on the list while you were posting Peter. Great minds. |

Might want sub Earl Williams in at catcher.

What about first name? I would think George would be impossible to beat.

I need a catcher, 2b, ss and SP |

George Davis, HOF ss Junior Griffey's real first name is George as well. |
We could have fun with guys named Larry who never went by Larry. Berra and Jones. If you take regular Larry's you can add Walker, Doby and Hisle for a good outfield, Bowa at short, Doyle at 2b, Dierker or Gura pitching (without looking it up I imagine they're super close) so I need a 1b, there's gotta be someone I'm not thinking of.

Willie Mays, Willie Randolph, Willie McCovey, Billy Williams, Billy Hamilton, Billy Herman, Bill Terry, Bill Dickey...
|

Willie Davis might make the team with his over 60 WAR. No room for Stargell with Terry on the team. Ditto Keeler and Wilson and McGee |

William Roger Clemens. |
Saw that the Sporting News looked a cumulative WAR for all players with the same last names, and just like this thread, concluded Johnson and Williams were at the top:
