The Day the Sky Rained Money (1940, Pittsburgh)
During a Pirates-Reds doubleheader at Forbes Field, a gust from a passing storm ripped open a payroll blimp advertising Gulf Oil. $2,400 in singles—worth $55,000 today—spiraled onto the bleachers. Ushers abandoned posts; the organist played “Pennies from Heaven.” A 12-year-old paperboy, Tony Russo, stuffed $47 into his cap and bought his mother a Frigidaire. The Pirates won both games; the blimp pilot was fired. Tony’s bill #G00471940 is framed at the Heinz History Center.

Great story, but man does that photo looked staged (everyone has their hands identically in the air, the dollar bills looked to clear and photoshopped).

The one-legged woman being impaled by that handrail is almost as odd as the placement of the mini-pipe organ.

Speaking of the organ, there are so many things wrong with it. They couldn’t even get the keys right.

Not Forbes Field which had Longines clock in left field.

That's an AI generated photo. Lots of telltale signs.

Correct.

Also, a thank you for posting the Mazeroski home run from someone who goes to the wall every October 13.

Obviously, it's PITT-CIN Park. Everyone remembers good ol' PITT-CIN Park!

Come on

A Payroll blimp? Get real! And stuffed with ones? Even I’m not that dumb…..

The amount of AI generated photos is getting out of hand on facebook. this is a great example. it does make for some entertainment though spotting all the errors..

I am. But as far as I can now tell, there was no such raining down of stripper greenbacks at a Pirates game in 1940. And evidently there is a "payroll blimp" term that I was totally unaware of, and that the current Pirates owner is associated with it, for not being willing to spend money toward putting out a competitive team, even with plenty of revenue to do so.

And to think I was so happy that little Tony Russo was able to finally get that Frigidaire for his mamma.

At least I spotted the bogus photo.

What a cheesy image.

Nobody is going to talk about the one legged woman with the bad pole placement.

Oh and every single person is right handed.

Sadly, that detail drew my eye almost immediately.

Since we're pointing out what's wrong with the photo:

Are there more umpires than players on the field?

frankbmd 11-14-2025 03:38 PM

The woman got a good deal - 50% off

Of all things, that's what first caught my eye that something wasnt right. Too many umpires, especially for a regular season game.

A few quick thoughts regarding my feelings about AI:

I think "Artificial Intelligence" may be one of the worst names anyone could have come up with for this. At its core, AI is just a computer program. It's only as "intelligent" as the programming which drives it.

In essence, AI is a collection of inputs and outputs. Yes, the amount of them can be (an often is) staggering. It's still just a glorified version of auto-correct, though. The computer plays the percentages and shows you (according to the programming it was designed with) the thing you were most likely to be looking for.

It's not intelligent. It just has a huge memory bank.

OK, back to picking on the picture. :D

So AI and no catcher.. AI sucks but good for Stocks.. for now

Not to mention, those dollar bills are about the size of posters.
