Interesting CGC allegation video
Presenting just for discussion on grading as this obviously does not concern a card but a comic book graded by a card grading service.
IF indeed the idea presented was what happened, I find the theory of the original graded sub being sold for profit and the swapped item then undergraded cracked and resubmitted to get the correct higher grade adding false counts and additional money an intriguing one. Could such errors be more common than thought and a source for some of the many overgraded cards and/or undergraded cards? What would that say about internal QC? This seems far more theoretical than factual as the explanation is impossible to factually prove and can only be a best guess by the hosts. I also know and follow to a T, the “buy the card not the holder” and a ton of those responses is already expected. However, we all know that numerous collectors especially younger ones don’t.Hoping for some deeper thoughts than that on what this says as to the grading industry. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=biOqnOWbN1g |
I watched some of the video. It's just grading....buy the card, not the holder.
I am glad I skipped around on the video as to not waste all of the 15 minutes to know it's just grading. Play stupid games win stupid prizes. . |
I don't know. I suppose it is possible given the numbers of cards being handled daily by these grading companies. Ultimately, for the buyer, it comes down to purchasing the card and not the holder, which is what we see happening more and more in our hobby. If this is really happening, then yes, the numbers of higher graded cards is artificially being inflated, causing a perception perhaps that there is less scarcity then truly exists among higher grade examples. But it is probably a smaller concern than what we already know is happening with the cross-grading process. I think cracking out a card and resubmitting it to a different grader artificially bumps up the numbers way more than this proposed card switching theory.

nothing surprises me anymore regarding grading.

I guess my thoughts are leaning more towards the bigger and faster you grow and leaner for more profit does the quality control eventually become so bad that mistakes are completely commonplace? I would answer, in any industry…yes. That said, I will add my quote too for the registration addicts. “Buy the card, not the holder”. |
Buy the Comic, not the Coffin!
 |
I came away from the video with a new phrase: a "gift grade"
I've not heard that before, but I like it. I'd really like a gift grade because I usually seem to get grade-shafted. |
It was an interesting video. Play it at 1.75 speed to get through it much quicker. The audio is clear at 1.75 speed.
One of these days... bubble is gonna pop on a lot of collectibles. |

Laughing out loud. Those who don't follow that very simple mantra deserve exactly what they get. The more they lose the better the lesson learned. Or not, hahaha. No sympathy from me. |
I just checked the prices on that comic. The market for that book has plummeted like a rock.

PSA does this sometimes and they call it a Mechanical Error. Or they just type in the number wrong and call it a cert number, like the 2x Joe Montana rookies they labeled PSA 10 that were both at least 70/30 off-centered. The submitter who got them posted about it, and PSA recalled those cards and gave them 6s the second time.
The bigger scam that happened last year with CGC comics grading side was that some submitters were taking advantage of their reholders and getting previously lower graded comics slabbed as higher graded comics because they submitted them as accidentally cracked out from the outer slab, but then they went and re-submitted the original high-grade comic raw to get a 2nd high grade copy. Then they kept doing that. https://www.blowoutforums.com/showthread.php?t=1576010 |
Grading whether its sports cards, coins or comic books, opinions are like as&holes everybody has one such as grading companies. Take their grades with a grain of salt
