October Pickups

10 days into the month...

3 of the 5 Spalding trophies proudly displayed from these 1927 Champs! One day this will be a companion piece when I complete the set.:D

P.S I hate taking pictures of glass framed photos due to the guaranteed glare

perezfan 10-10-2025 01:16 PM

That is an AWESOME photo, Michael...

Which of the Spaldings do you still need?

ruth-gehrig 10-10-2025 01:29 PM

Thanks Mark - I saw a much smaller photo awhile back with the fielder trophy that I missed out on. Didnt want to let this one slip away. Couldn't believe it when I saw 3 trophies pictured together! And the most desirable, hardest to now find, if I remember your post about that discussion correctly.

I only have the batter. I understand it will be a slow journey and that's ok too.

Yep, ten days. I swear the good stuff is drying up. By “good stuff,” I mean memorabilia, not cards. :p

That’s a great piece!

Lol no kidding Rob. Card side is roaring out of the gate on the 1st.

Been awhile since I have posted a pick up. For whatever reason this Manny Sanguillen Advisory Staff Photo has eluded me for thirty years. This one is only the second one I’ve ever seen. It’s a small thing but most definitely scratched a very old itch.

I love it when you can add to maybe the most specialized collection on this board! :D

P.S. the guy with the Stargell bank in B/S/T might have something of interest to you.

I think I remember Mike posting one of those in a pickups thread.

Yeah, but the guy says he has other stuff from “the same era.”

71buc 10-29-2025 08:29 PM

Thanks Rob I’ll check it out. I do already have the Stargell and Clemente Advisory Staff photos and banks but I am interested in other things he may have.

This thread from Christie's recent auction helps boost the number of pickups on the month:)

Nolan Ryan 2nd no-hitter completed framed project

Admittedly, Nolan Ryan's 2nd no-hitter on 7/15/73 has always had a special place in my advanced no-hitter collection.

In the opinion of many, including the Tigers starting 9, "Nolan had everything".

He struck out 17 with his blazing 100 MPH fastball and nasty 12-6 curveball.
His stuff was so overpowering that Tigers 1st baseman Norm Cash (a notorious jokester) brought a table leg from the clubhouse instead of a bat to the plate with two outs in the bottom of the 9th.
Home plate umpire Ron Luciano stopped Cash before he reached the batters box and asked him what he was doing with the table leg? Cash responded "that it didn't matter as he wasn't going to be able to hit Ryan anyway!"
Classic!

Nolan's 2nd no-hitter in 1973 allowed him to join only Vander Meer, Allie Reynolds and Virgil Trucks as only the 4th pitchers to hurl 2 no-no's in a single season. Since 1973 only two other pitchers, Roy Halladay and Max Scherzer, have joined this exclusive club...

After many years of wanting to complete a 2nd no-hitter framed project, I finally have it up on the wall.

Anyway, my framed 2nd no-hitter project includes the following:
Signed and 2nd no-hitter inscribed photo of Nolan at Tiger Stadium
2nd no-hitter ticket stub from 7/15/73
A signed snapshot of Norm Cash
A snapshot of Nolan leaving the stadium after the 2nd no-hitter.

I love the way it turned out & it's up on the wall after years of pondering the final project.

Beautiful display piece, Scott! Epic achievement by Ryan, and well done on the matting, framing and design!
