Ohtani in the outfield during the postseason?

Love the Dodgers or hate the Dodgers, but when you have a guy with 3 (and probably soon to be 4) MVP awards publicly saying he's willing to play anywhere on the field to help his team win, it's a powerful statement. It wouldn't surprise me if this guy has been shagging fly balls late at night all season long just to be prepared for the 0.1% chance he's gotta play right field in the top of the 10th inning of Game 7 of the World Series.

I could see him gunning out base runners Rck Ankiel style

Why would you want a cold outfielder for game 7? He hasn’t played all year what kind of play can you expect him to make that your every day outfielder won’t?

Dave Roberts just doesn't have that Joe Maddon in him.

As it talks about in the linked article, it probably has to do with being able to have him pitch in relief and also stay in the lineup once he is done pitching. If they just used him to close (and there's no blown save) then maybe not an issue.

A question for Dodgers fans: Bottom of the 9th, Game 7 of the World Series, up by 1. Top of the lineup due up for your opponent. Who do want on the hill, Tanner Scott or Shohei Ohtani?

I think that would be an Aaron Boone-esque move for a manager to make. It’s game 7 and the 10th inning. You lean on the guys who got you there all year not Ohtani (or in Boone’s case, Nestor Cortes). I wouldn’t put him in when I need outs late in the World Series. I guess if he started the game but having him start game 7 when you’re counting on his bat seems counterintuitive.

I see Yankees fans haven't forgotten about Nestor Cortes...

Right now, if you put a gun to my head, I'd rather have Ohtani or Sheehan or even Kershaw come in cold to get 3 outs in the 10th than Blake Treinen or Tanner Scott. Those two guys seem to have blown every hold or save chance this month.

Roberts always gets way too cute with his bullpen. If he's smart he will turn whichever starters aren't starting into bulk/long relievers in the playoffs.

Aquarian Sports Cards 09-24-2025 06:27 AM

the amount of times in the last month the Dodgers starters have allowed 5 hits or less (with a couple of no-hit bids thrown in) and no runs and left with a multi run lead only for the Dodgers to lose is mind-blowing. Their starting pitching has been off the hook for weeks now and they're still only playing .500 ball

Bullpen adventure again in the bottom of the 8th....

Kershaw warming up in the bullpen

Aquarian Sports Cards 09-25-2025 02:23 PM

Kershaw worked out for them this time, but generally speaking I'm not fond of him out of the bullpen. Without looking at his splits I feel like the first inning is always his worst inning. Out of the bullpen that's a scary proposition.

Edit: Just checked out the splits. The first inning is his worst inning in terms of ERA with only the 6th inning being close. Making a case that pulling good starters is dumb the 7th 8th and 9th innings his ERA is under 2.30 for all three. So much for not letting hitters see your starter a third time.

BobbyStrawberry 09-25-2025 04:20 PM

They just have so many starters. If I had to guess, it will be Snell, Ohtani, Glasnow and Yama as their starters with everyone else in the pen.

jayshum 09-28-2025 05:35 PM

Kershaw started today and will not be on the wild card series roster according to an article I just read. If Dodgers lose to the Reds, his career would be over.

The Reds look bad. Very bad.

The Reds' best weapon in this series is the Dodgers bullpen.

Indeed. It's like watching a slow motion train wreck. Imagine if they blow this game.

Dodgers bullpen alert again.
