Ohtani got poleaxed by the Rockies
Well, having watched Ohtani's last two starts, I think batters have figured him out. Dodgers look like the third or fourth seed in the NL, which means that there is a good chance they end up playing the Mets.
The good news for the Mets is that the Dodgers will be under massive pressure to play Ohtani during the playoffs, and right now, he's looking eminently hittable. Let's Go Mets!! |
And this is weird, Ohtani's pitching fWAR actually INCREASED by 0.2 after last night's game. I did some digging into how the stat is calculated (apologies if everyone else here knows this already), but basically, the stat heads are of the view that the parade of hits and runs that Ohtani gave up in the fourth inning were more the product of luck and subpar defense than the batters just beating up on him.
I dunno. It doesn't pass the eye test. |
I think you forgot he hits too.

Seems maybe not quite washed up yet.

1. The first 3 weeks of the season tell you everything you need to know about the rest of a player's career and how bad a deal he was in free agency. 2. One bad outing by a player 30 years old or more means they're cooked. 3. a 5 game losing streak in the middle of a 162 game season means you should blow up the team and start over. 4. Bob Nutting is the anti-christ. Wait, that one might be right. |
I envy those fans who can dispassionately support their teams through thick and thin, never riding the emotional highs and lows of the season!
I love Ohtani -- he kicks ass, he works hard, and through this fan's eye test is a classy player. Hard to compare players across eras, but Ohtani has a strong case for all time GOAT (as an aside, the world record for the 100 meter dash in 1925, Babe's era, was 10.6 seconds -- which would place second today. Among 9th graders. In the state of New Jersey.) All this being said, I hope he sucks if it helps the Mets. So it's great that he kicked ass against the Reds, and I hope he does it again if he pitches against Philly in a couple of weeks. But Juan Soto will always suck, unless he brings home a ring for the Mets. In which case, he gets to be Keith Hernandez. |
My personal favorite is the suggestion that if the Manager yelled at the players more they would throw strikes and hit better with RISP. Too bad we can't bring Billy Martin back. He never lost.

I'm okay with Ohtani getting hit hard. In fact, the harder, the better.
When the Dodgers lose, we all win. |
