Does the guy standing in the middle of this postcard with a Fedora hat look like Walter Johnson?

Frank Shildorf (guess on the writing) is the only one identified on the back.

:)

Certainly favors him but when I blow up the picture it is too fuzzy to say.

I'm sure some facial recognition program can settle it.

No, it is clearly Joe Jackson.

Sorry for the delay, but I was out a bar watching Skenes pitch for the Pirates. I don't even drink.

Here is a zoom in.

Where is jollyrogersrelics when you need him?

rand1com 08-18-2025 06:23 PM

Looks a l little like him but I’m thinking not him when comparing online photos to this one. Maybe his grandson Hank will reply.

Approaching from another angle . . .

Possibly a long shot, but Frank Schelldorf (born in Iowa in 1882) is a person who existed, and the family name also shows up as both "SHELDORF" and "SCHELDORF", so he seems like a potential candidate for the player on the right.

Questions for those more knowledgeable than I:

1) Does that look like heaven (aka Iowa)?

2) Does the equipment seem appropriate for that era?

3) It looks like the family spent a lot of time in Carroll & Crawford counties; does anyone know what uniforms would've looked like in that area at that time?

.

Just a note that his uniform does not match the others so it could have been a photo op.

Settles it IMO.

Yea Like Ty Cobb, Walter Johnson took a lot of pride in his uniform - Not saying the fellow in the picture is a slob but that uniform is a bit too wrinkly

And his grandson (hi Hank) said it's not him.
