You are a George Burke PC sized photo, although due to the graininess of the photo and the era in which Sherry Smith mostly played, it doesn't appear to be a photo taken by Burke himself, but rather something reproduced by him and sold to someone who wanted a Smith photo.

Thanks very much. The photo is "grainy" but the stock and printing quality is quite nice. Any thoughts about the significance of the typewriting on back?

George Burke offered a very large selection of players on similar postcard size stock, all with a numbering system on the back and his back stamp. Later George Brace continued the offering and then Brace's daughter.

Burke (and later Brace, who inherited the stock from Burke, combining them with his own 60+ years of photos) used those codes for their own identification and customer ordering purposes. "A3" denotes the team. They used to mail out voluminous catalogues which were sorted alphabetically by surname, then there would be the various team codes. These catalogs were text only. A customer would write them with, "I'd like a Sherry Smith in A3". This stayed the same from way back when (1930's?) all the way into the 1990's when I used to order from Brace and his daughter, and even into the 2000s after Brace had passed and his daughter did it on her own. If you weren't already familiar with some of the Burke/Brace poses, it was a complete surprise what kind of image you'd get other than knowing what uniform the player was depicted in. You also had the option of ordering a portrait or action shot. As a young autograph collector, the anticipation was a lot of fun! Then, I'd mail them out to the players to be signed.
