GENE TUNNEY HANDWRITTEN PAGE REFERENCING THE 1927 JACK DEMPSEY "LONG COUNT" FIGHT Amazing content. Tunney writes "When I was knocked down in the 7th round of the Chicago Dempsey match it being the first and only time of my life" Measures 4x6. Also signed on reverse by Tunney and Primo Carnera (Heavyweight Champion 1933-1934, Died-1967). The battle of the Long Count is considered one of the major sports events of the century. The Long Count Fight, or the Battle of the Long Count, was a professional boxing 10-round rematch between world heavyweight champion Gene Tunney and former champion Jack Dempsey, which Tunney won in a unanimous decision. It took place on September 22, 1927, at Soldier Field in Chicago. "Long Count" is applied to the fight because, when Tunney was knocked down in the seventh round, the count was delayed due to Dempsey's failure to go to and remain in a neutral corner. By many accounts the referees count was delayed over 10 seconds allowing Tunney at least 20 seconds to recover. Gene Tunney held the Light Heavyweight title 1922-1923 and Heavyweight title 1926-1928. He retired undefeated and died in 1978. $650.00
