Need Help from the Experts: 1928 Ruth Fro-Joy Authenticity
Good Afternoon!
I've been on the baseballcards_vintage subreddit for a while and posted a question to the group yesterday. Multiple users suggested reaching out to the wealth of knowledge that is contained within this net54 forum. Thus, here I am, and thanks in advance for any possible answers you can provide! I took a gamble this past weekend on an uncut sheet of 1928 Fro-Joy Babe Ruth cards. I am well aware that these are frequently counterfeited, so I knew it was dicey when I placed my bourbon-fueled bid to begin with. Honestly, I didn't expect to win it, so I'm now trying to figure out if these are likely authentic or not, which would determine whether or not I would send them to BVG for actual authentication. Following is a OneDrive folder with photos (https://1drv.ms/f/c/d4374cd14bc74d50...9dw4w?e=mTDUWX) and I hope someone can tell me whether or not they believe these to be authentic or definitely reproductions. Again, I appreciate any guidance you can provide on these and simply appreciate your time! |
Not an expert on this set by any means but it looks artificially aged to me. Compare to e.g. https://www.ebay.com/itm/276763853189?
For reference, here is the OP's post on Reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/baseballcar...am_i_an_idiot/ |
Sorry, but that is a reprint.
|
When comparing it to an original or any that are graded by beckett, there is a very clear loss of detail in the images.
Reprint unfortunately. Sent from my SM-S721U1 using Tapatalk |
Truly appreciate the quick replies everyone! Based on the one comment I received yesterday about the text boxes not meeting in the corners on the back of the cards, I was already pretty sure these were the answers I was going to receive. I appreciate ya'll taking the time to review and confirm for me!

Check this example. SGC didn't know WTF they were doing either :).... . |
i got taken on a similar fake fro joy sheet in the late 80's while in college...I still have it somewhere. I have since completed the fro joy set...the real ones look quite different from the known fakes out there. Lots of nuances to determine real vs fake for these!
|
I think the Fro-Joy uncut sheet has taken it's toll on many of us. I remember buying one in the 80's and I still have it because somewhere in my mind I refuse to believe it is fake despite the overwhelming evidence that it is indeed fake. I have thought about making it a cool display piece to hang on the wall but that would only remind me of the 20 bucks I blew buying this thing.

Fro-Joy Uncut Sheet

Oh yes it has. I remember back in the 1980's when I though my college was paid for because I found a Fro-Joy uncut sheet but unlike everyone else who had the simple B&W ones... well mine was in color! Sigh... Might not have helped pay for college but I did learn a lesson. |
I have two different guys try and consign the color ones. Don't feel bad Pete!

Elm, we need a new dictionary entry for the Fandango FroJoys.

Faux-Joy
The sick elation felt by scammers when they’re able to fool a collector into believing their artificial reprint is, in fact, a legitimate 1928 Fro-Joy Babe Ruth card. |
