Fun With Numbers: Who's Second Most?

We all of familiar with famous retired uniform numbers:

(I'm adding first 'thought' players as they are mentioned)

Jeff Leonard= 00
Ozzie Smith= #1
Jeter= #2
Ruth= #3 (corrected...what a moron...my editor was asleep)
Gehrig= #4
DiMaggio= #5
Musial= #6
Mantle= #7
Yogi= #8
Ted= #9
Chipper= #10
Banks= #14
Dick Allen= 15
Gwynn= #19
Schmidt= #20
Clemente= #21
Palmer=22
Mattingly=23
Mays= #24
Boggs=26 (yours truly is 2nd) lol
Marichal=27
Maddux=31
Koufax= #32
Seaver= #41
Jackie = #42
Aaron= #44
Glavine=47
Randy Johnson=51
Drysdale=53
Fisk #72
etc.

But, who is the second player that comes to mind with each number?

You can include numbers not retired too (Trout #27 etc.)

I would say Willie McCovey and Reggie Jackson for 44.

And you didn't include #1 for #1, which is Ozzie Smith!

Casey2296 06-03-2025 08:43 AM

-
#4 Mel Ott

bk400 06-03-2025 09:01 AM

For 32, I only think of Magic Johnson.

For #24, it'd be Rickey Henderson.

For me, 32 is Steve Carlton.

Also, Ruth usually makes me think of 3 not 7. :)

I was just including a few...all responders are welcome to add, though I'd prefer to stick to Baseball (Magic doesn't count even though he's part-owner of LAD).

Just depends where you're from, doesn't it?

#1 will always be Lou Whitaker
#2 is Charlie Gehringer
#3 is Alan Trammell
#5 is Hank Greenberg
#6 is Al Kaline
#9 is Gordie Howe - baseball or not
#11 is Sparky Anderson
#20 is Mark the Bird Fidrych
#24 is Miguel Cabrera
#29 is Mickey Lolich

and my number as a kid (#14) will always remind me of John B. Wockenfuss.

Nationally, Pete Rose had #14 too. I always remembered him and Reggie's #44 with the Yankees being the same as Aaron's.

A few to consider

bk400 06-04-2025 07:21 AM

I'd say Ichiro for 51. I'd actually put him at #1 ahead of Randy Johnson.

Ozzie’s Replacement Garry Templeton wore number one also - 15 years .
Here’s a fun link - enter the uniform number and it tells you who wore it and how many years they wore it

Another question might be which number has the best players?

#21 has Clemente, Spahn, Clemens, Arkey Vaughn, Greinke (with the Dodgers D-Backs, Astros), Sammy Sosa, Jeff Kent, Paul O'Neill

#24 has Mays, Bonds (w/ Pirates), Rickey Henderson, Ken Griffey Jr., Manny Ramirez, Dwight Evans, Tony Perez

#44 has Aaron, Reggie Jackson, McCovey, Goldschmidt

Looks like Roberto Alomar and Jeff Kent both wore 12. Currently, Francisco Lindor does.

Here’s a serious challenger for number 19 Gwynn

The only way to bag a classy lady is to give her two tickets to the gun show.

Will Ferrell is awesome.
