1967 Venezuelan Topps Satchel Paige

1 Attachment(s)
I just discovered this card recently and am wondering -- did Satchel Paige play in Venezuela in 1966 or '67? I thought his appearance in KC in '65 was it for him. Was this more of a tribute card?

Appreciate any insight!

Tribute

Tribute card…… there were a bunch including Ruth Cobb Gehrig etc….. all with the word “Retirado” which translates to Retired…… hard to find in decent shape…..

Thanks for the info!

The 1967 Venezuelan set doesn't mirror the regular Topps set as closely as other Venezuelan sets do.

The first 138 cards in the set featured stars of the Venezuelan Winter League. The next 50 cards in the set were retired legends (or "retirado"). And the final 150 cards in the set were active MLB players.

Here is a Dave Concepcion from the Winter League portion of the set, 4 years before his major league rookie card.

Timothy, Dave was my favorite player growing up in the southern half of Indiana in the early '80s -- I've been eyeing that card to pick it up. Yours is a beauty!

I had no idea until recently that he basically played in his home country every winter throughout his entire career.

Thanks. These are hard to find with no damage on the back, so I was thrilled to pick it up in Strongsville last month.

Wow, these are great looking cards! The whole issue covers 3 distinct subsets.

This thread goes back a few years, but there is/was a net54 member, "Josh", who would seem to be an expert on all the Venezuelan Topps issues. The 1967 issue is really quite interesting to me.

There were some 1967 Venezuelan cards at a regional show today, first time I’ve seen any in person. They were priced really high and when parties asked, the dealer said it was because of their scarcity.

I’m not interested in foreign language cards, but they are interesting.

I've always been intrigued by the Venezuelan cards. That old thread has some great info in it.
