Grail Acquired: 52T Mathews RC

Just a little show off thread for one of my favorite cards that I've never had the pleasure of owning until now. May have paid a bit strong for it but these still seem undervalued for what they are.

Thank you all for looking!

Just realized I may have posted this in the wrong spot. My apologies in advance!

Beautiful card of one of my favorite players. I traded mine for a T206 Red Cobb and it is one of the very few cards I wish I would have kept.

Very nice card and I agree it is a special and iconic card in the hobby. I am also still kicking myself for not buying a PSA 5 that was offered here on the BST back when prices were much more "reasonable". ;)

Oh, and you definitely ticked the "nicely centered" box which is very tough to do with this card. Congrats on adding a nice one to the collection!

The 52 Mathews is also my grail, and I was fortunate enough to pick one up a year and a half ago. Great card. Congratulations!

Great card! Definitely one of my favorites! I don’t own one currently (sigh), but hopefully again one day.

BobbyStrawberry 05-14-2025 11:25 AM

That's a very nice example. Congrats!

I wonder how many people had the intestinal fortitude to mail Eddie this card and his $3 fee to sign it?! Not too many. It's long had value. While I love signed cards, I was never a fan of Eddie's later autograph, so prefer the look of this card unsigned. Now, if it was a rookie-era (or at least 1950's-era) signed example, that would be a whole different story. His autograph was pretty nice for about the first decade of his career.

Congrats on bringing that grail home!

I always felt there was a connection with the Mathews Rookie and the Tom Seaver Rookie in that they are both special cards, but the second year cards for these two players are are huge drop off, with nowhere near the interest that the rookie cards get.

BillyC_KY 05-15-2025 08:20 PM

Very nice card!! Centering is great. Congrats

babraham 05-16-2025 12:52 AM

Thank you everyone for the kind words. Quality centering was the main goal in choosing this one. I knew I wasn’t going to find 50/50 all around in the grades I could afford. Heck, I don’t know if 50/50 centering exists in the grades I can’t afford haha but I did set a budget and luckily was able to find this quality specimen for a fair price.
