Birdfy Feeder is pretty cool

I bought this Birdfy Bamboo AI Feeder for my wife for Christmas and just put it up last weekend. It's pretty cool as it identifies the birds and takes videos, it has also invited a Raccoon and squirrels. Today I put a metal duct around the post to keep them from climbing to the feeder

We’ve had one called Bird Buddy for a few years…. IDs the birds, takes videos, sends to your cell phone. Doggone squirrels keep getting the feed….

Same here with the IDs, try the metal duct pipe if possible

Wish we could put up something like that. Bears around here will find a way to rip that thing to shreds before we have it up for a week.

Get Safflower seed. Birds love it. Squirrels don’t.

Black Bears around here a pretty harmless, but they are aggressive scavengers when nobody’s around to scare them off. Kind of like raccoons with super strength :D. They rip down our deer fencing at least once a year to get to our fruit trees.

We made the mistake of setting up a bird feeder inside the run we use for the dogs, and they climbed over 2 sets of fences to get to it.

They are quiet to. Dogs usually don’t even notice they’re in the area. Squirrels make more noise trampling through the woods then the bears do.

If you're into bird watching at all, I'd highly recommend the Merlin Bird ID app.

You can be on a hike with the app running and it will identify birds by the sound. It's totally free, and it works really well. It's fun because you can hear a bird without being able to see it and the app will identify it. It also keeps track of all the birds you've identified. I'm up over 100.

It's the only app I've ever owned that I seriously considered giving money to.

Where I lived before, they have Bear Season to keep the population down.

They've tossed that idea around here in CT, but haven't quite gotten to that point yet. They do now allow farmers to cull bear, if they have done damage to their property, and are pretty quick to euthanize a bear if it's been reported to be a threat, or gets way too comfortable around humans.

It's funny, when I was growing up in this area, we never saw Bears in the 70's-80's-90's, and nobody I knew ever saw one. Wasn't until the mid 2000's or so, I saw my first bear in one of our neighborhoods. Been pretty steady growth ever since.

I just saw a Mama and two cubs skirting our property last week.

We do have a half dozen or so Hummingbird feeders hanging around the yard. Bears don't seem to bother with them. They just want the seeds and fruit.
